Revealing Bui Quynh Hoa's national costume at Miss Universe 2023

Bui Quynh Hoa chose the design Co Sen for the national costume performance at Miss Universe 2023. The outfit has a striking red color, inspired by the costume of the medium in the Vietnamese Mother Goddess worship ceremony.

After many sideline activities, Miss Universe 2023 contestants are rushing to prepare for important competitions, including the national costume performance scheduled to take place on November 16. In this competition, the representative from Vietnam, Bui Quynh Hoa, will bring the design Co Sen.

This national costume was inspired by the costume of the spirit medium in the Vietnamese Mother Goddess worship ceremony. The Co Sen costume was designed by designer Chu Thi Hong Anh and her colleagues. Designer Khoa Lo took on the role of cultural heritage consultant and designer Ngo Thi Ngoc Mai was in charge of the details and patterns on the design.

The outfit was meticulously crafted using silk and brocade as the main materials. Despite the contemporary breath in the design, the team still retained the distinctive features of the costume of the Holy Mother Lieu Hanh. The red color represents authority and prosperity, and is also the color of the Mother Goddess of Heaven (a mother goddess belonging to the Four Palaces branch of the Vietnamese Mother Goddess Religion).

The shape of the costume is inspired by the four-panel dress. The highlight is the embroidered motifs of a pair of phoenixes and lotus flowers. This costume is also combined with a crown, fan and shoes.

Designer Chu Thi Hong Anh said that this design was inspired by the costume that the Holy Mother Lieu Hanh wore to the festival, not the costume she wore when she sat on the majestic altar. The design of Co Sen has both traditional beauty and a modern, fresh look.

Compared to the national costumes worn by many Vietnamese beauties to Miss Universe in previous years, Bui Quynh Hoa's national costume is lighter and simpler, without complicated assembly parts or bulky details, which helps her move more easily on stage.

Designer Khoa Lo said that the process of completing the national costume for Bui Quynh Hoa received enthusiastic support from his colleagues. Previously, he had made a number of national costumes, including the design Ken em accompanying Khanh Van at Miss Universe 2020 or Ai tet hong ?, brought by Kim Duyen to Miss Universe 2021.
