CNN reported that General Keith Kellogg, the candidate for special envoy in charge of the Russia-Ukraine conflict chosen by US President-elect Donald Trump, has presented a peace plan to end this war.

Mr Kellogg's proposal includes freezing the Russia-Ukraine conflict along its current lines with a ceasefire and establishing a demilitarized zone.

If Russia accepts this, sanctions will be eased and eventually lifted completely once a peace deal is signed to Ukraine's liking.

US aid to Ukraine will depend on its willingness to engage in dialogue with Russia. Kellogg wants the US to arm Ukraine more, but he also acknowledged that providing weapons at a level that can deter current and future Russian advances will not be easy.

Washington could provide aid in the form of loans, which could strain Ukraine’s economy. But taxes on Russian energy exports would pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

The key point of the plan is the proposal to temporarily postpone Ukraine's NATO membership. This should be part of a comprehensive peace agreement with security guarantees for Ukraine.

Ukraine would not be asked to give up reclaiming territory controlled by Russia, but would agree to pursue it through diplomatic means.

The proposal also includes plans to establish a tightly controlled demilitarized zone, demarcating territory controlled by Russia or Ukraine.

NATO or other countries could deploy peacekeeping forces there. However, this proposal is unlikely to be feasible due to the huge human and financial resources required to maintain peace along a border stretching up to 1,000km.

During his campaign, President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that he could end the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours by forcing Kiev and Moscow to the negotiating table. Finding a quick solution to the conflict that has lasted nearly three years will certainly require concessions from each side.

In an interview with Sky News on November 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine could sign a ceasefire agreement with Russia if Ukrainian territory was placed under NATO security protection.

NATO membership would have to be granted to areas currently controlled by Ukraine to end the "hot phase of the conflict", he stressed.

The comments mark a significant shift in Ukraine's stance. Ukraine has previously said it would continue fighting Russia until it regains all of its territory, including the Crimean peninsula.
