Happiness in Education: The Journey of Sowing Smiles

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí26/11/2024

(Dan Tri) - "Every day at school is a happy day" is a familiar slogan, but have we ever wondered where that joy comes from and how to make every day at school truly a happy day?

The workshop "Happiness in Education 2024" organized by the Institute for Education Research and Human Resources Development (EDI) and TH School in Hanoi, opened an inspiring door to the journey to find answers.

True Happiness in Education - More than Little Moments

According to Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Tuyet Mai, happiness can come from simple things like a mother's smile to her child, a teacher's smile to her student. But happiness in education does not stop at fleeting moments. It is a journey of nurturing and nurturing so that each child feels loved, can be themselves and is free to develop.

"Training the mind without training the heart is not called mind", the words of Greek philosopher Aristotle quoted by Associate Professor Mai affirmed the importance of emotional education.

According to her, learning needs to be associated with joy and self-discovery. When students have the opportunity to experience, "learn while playing, play while learning", and discover their own talents, they will feel happy and shine.

Martin Skelton, an international education consultant and co-creator of the IPC, shared his story with his friend Fred. "Fred used to come to school early every morning to help me.

During class, if I looked through my classroom window and he looked through his, I would say, "Help!" And he would come out of his classroom, meet me in the hallway, give me some advice, and then I would go back to class and try to do better. This happened three times a day.

By the end of the first year, I had reduced my need for help to about once a week. One day, Fred said to me, "You're not a good teacher. Your students aren't learning anything. You're just keeping them busy."

It was that candid comment that changed Martin Skelton’s life. From then on, he no longer saw himself as a teacher who simply assigned homework, but as a companion, helping students truly learn and progress.

Mr. Skelton's story raises an important question: Are we really bringing happiness to our students, or are we just keeping them busy with homework and grades?

Finding the formula for happiness

Education is not only about knowledge and skills, but also about emotions, connections and meanings. Associate Professor Mai also emphasized the role of the PERMA model in creating happy schools.

PERMA stands for Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. Each element in this model plays an important role in creating a positive learning environment where students feel encouraged, connected, and fully developed.

That said, in creating a happy educational environment, we need to nurture positive emotions, arouse interest, build good relationships between teachers and students, help them find meaning in learning and achieve worthy achievements.

Professor Yong Zhao, a lecturer at the University of Kansas (USA) who has spent many years researching education in different countries, expressed his concern about the current state of education. "You know, there are many good ideas about education. But why hasn't our learning environment changed much?", he asked.

According to Professor Zhao, the problem is not a lack of ideas, but how we implement those ideas. Every child is different, each has his or her own talents. Education needs to change to help them realize their potential, contribute to society and find true happiness.

Journey of sharing and understanding

Speaking at the workshop, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son emphasized the role of teachers in creating happiness for students. "In educational activities, teachers always listen, always understand, always share, which is very important to make students' learning interesting," he affirmed.

A happy teacher will spread happiness to his students. Therefore, taking care of mental health, creating conditions for teachers to develop themselves, to contribute and be creative is also contributing to building a happy educational environment.

The "Happiness in Education 2024" conference has ended, but the journey to sow smiles continues.
