Dakrong Nature Reserve has a natural area of over 37,000 hectares with a biodiversity of about 1,452 species of vascular plants, 91 species of mammals, 193 species of birds, 49 species of frogs and toads. Currently, a part of the land area of Dakrong Nature Reserve is still encroached by people. The handling and recovery of the area of special-use forests that have been encroached upon is facing many difficulties.

The general objective of the pilot project on forest restoration based on cooperation and benefit sharing with the community on the area of special-use forest land encroached in Dakrong Nature Reserve is: to solve the problem of forest restoration and benefit sharing with the community on the area of special-use forest land encroached in Dakrong Nature Reserve; to successfully build a model of forest restoration using native trees (tầu, dổi) on swidden land within the boundary of the reserve; to develop appropriate benefit sharing solutions for local people who are encroaching on special-use forest land.

In order to effectively implement the pilot forest restoration plan based on cooperation and benefit sharing with the community on the area of special-use forest land encroached in Dakrong Nature Reserve in the coming time, the workshop focused on discussing and contributing ideas to pilot forest restoration in Huc Nghi commune (Dakrong district) to recover the area of encroached forest land to serve forest restoration in Dakrong Nature Reserve.

The scope of the pilot implementation is in Sub-areas 724A and 730 in Huc Nghi commune. The subjects are the forest land areas of Dakrong Nature Reserve that are currently being encroached upon by people.

This pilot project will regenerate forests and share benefits with the community in the encroached area. Thereby, creating additional income from planting and caring for special-use forests as well as increasing community income from forest by-products, contributing to biodiversity conservation in the area and Dakrong Nature Reserve.

At the same time, after successfully implementing this pilot plan, it will serve as a basis for replication in communes with forest land encroachment in Dakrong Nature Reserve and consider expanding to other areas in the province.
