The Border Guard of Son La province is assigned to manage and protect the national border in the province, which is more than 274km long with 125 border markers, adjacent to Huaphanh and Luang Prabang provinces (Laos). This is considered one of the key and complicated areas for drug crime activities in the country. Although the functional forces have strengthened the organization of the fight, coordinated to destroy many major projects and cases, the subjects still thoroughly took advantage of the nature of the area, the family relationships on both sides of the border and took advantage of the rugged terrain, with many trails to organize the illegal buying and selling and transporting of drugs across the border.

Colonel Nguyen Dinh Huan, Commander of the Son La Provincial Border Guard Command, said: Determining that the fight against crime is an important task to maintain order and social security in the border area, the provincial Border Guard has proactively directed the drug and crime prevention and control force to step up investigation, verification, and grasp the situation of domestic and foreign crimes, methods and tricks of criminal organizations and lines. For example, during the peak of the Lunar New Year 2025, the Son La Provincial Border Guard successfully fought against the SL 824p and SL 1224 projects (phase 1), arrested 3 subjects, seized 8,800 synthetic drug pills, 3 grams of crystal meth, 432 kg of fireworks...

The Coast Guard is a specialized force responsible for managing security, order, safety and ensuring compliance with Vietnamese laws and relevant international treaties to which Vietnam is a member in the country's sea and continental shelf. In recent times, the Coast Guard has performed well in its tasks of detecting, preventing and combating violations of the law. Major General Tran Van Luong, Commander of Coast Guard Region 4, shared: Standing and performing tasks in the strategic and important sea and island areas in the southwest of the country, the unit always focuses on grasping, researching, assessing the situation, strictly implementing the process of inspection, control, combating, investigating and handling violations at sea.

In 2024 alone, Coast Guard Region 4 inspected and handled 685 cases/803 vessels, sanctioned and advised on administrative sanctions for 661 cases/758 vessels. The total amount of money collected from sanctions and the sale of confiscated assets was paid to the state budget of more than 37 billion VND. Prosecuted and reported 22 cases/34 vessels for serious violations of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In addition, Coast Guard Region 4 also investigated, verified, and handed over to the police many cases with signs of criminality; directly arrested and prosecuted many subjects for illegal trading, storage, and transportation of drugs.

The achievements of the Son La Provincial Border Guard and Coast Guard Region 4 in the fight against crime and law violations have contributed to the overall results of the two forces in the past year. Notably, the Border Guard units have presided over and coordinated the successful fight against 119 special projects; detected, arrested, and handled more than 7,200 cases, of which 786 cases were prosecuted with 972 subjects; administratively sanctioned more than 4,800 cases; the total amount of administrative fines and value of seized evidence was more than 233 billion VND. Coast Guard units detected more than 5,300 fishing vessels violating Vietnam's waters; detected, arrested, and handled nearly 1,700 cases of crime and violations at sea and in coastal areas, of which 100 cases were prosecuted with 134 subjects; administratively sanctioned nearly 1,400 cases; The total amount of administrative fines and the value of seized exhibits is over 200 billion VND. Along with that, the Coast Guard and Border Guard have done a good job of propagating, preventing and combating IUU violations; promptly fighting and requesting foreign ships to leave Vietnam's waters in accordance with policies, measures and regulations of the law...

In practice, the functional forces of the Border Guard and Coast Guard operate with a high degree of independence; incidents and situations occur on the border, sea and islands in complex weather conditions, regardless of day or night; crimes and violations are increasingly sophisticated in many areas. Therefore, the head of the Ministry of National Defense requires agencies and units directly performing law enforcement tasks to properly apply the policies and measures of the Party and State in the fight against crimes and violations; closely follow the grassroots, grasp all changes in the management area; be active and proactive in all situations, promptly prevent violations of the law. At the same time, step up patrolling, inspection, control, handling of law violations, fighting against crimes according to authority; focus on establishing special projects to combat and destroy criminal organizations and networks, smuggling, trade fraud, human trafficking, illegal entry and exit.
