Japan's Digital Agency (DA) said on April 17 that it had accidentally suspended transactions for about 20,000 bank accounts registered by people under the national identification system My Number to receive state subsidies.
According to the DA, the registered accounts were deactivated on April 11 based on false data from a credit union that said the accounts were unusable. The DA also said that restoration work is underway.
The DA said recipients of public funds such as pensions and child benefits can link their bank accounts to their ID numbers and the agency will work with banks and financial institutions to check whether accounts have been closed or suspended.
Since the My Number ID system was introduced in 2016, there have been a series of personal information leaks and registration errors, such as in 2023, some bank accounts were found to be linked to fake identification documents./.
