Maintain stability in drug rehabilitation after reorganization

Implementing the Project "Receiving the task of state management of drug addiction treatment and post-treatment management from the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs to the Ministry of Public Security", the Provincial Police Department directed the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department to take the lead in advising and developing plans and plans for receiving. At the same time, organize a review of personnel, facilities, equipment, and carry out the reception and transfer work quickly, safely and effectively.

We arrived at the Thai Nguyen Provincial Drug Addiction Treatment and Counseling Center in Thinh Dan Ward (Thai Nguyen City) on the day the facility was preparing to hand over its facilities according to the Project "Receiving the State management tasks on drug addiction treatment and drug addiction treatment management from the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs to the Ministry of Public Security". All treatment and production activities here are still taking place normally as usual, without any interruption due to the arrangement.

Currently, the Thai Nguyen Province Drug Addiction Treatment and Counseling Center is treating over 300 students. Mr. Nguyen Thai Nam, a medical officer here, said: Here, all patients are examined, evaluated, and classified, from which there is a treatment plan for withdrawal, detoxification, treatment of mental disorders, treatment of other diseases... according to the correct procedures and regulations.

In 2024, the facility received 502 people, reaching over 200% of the assigned target. Of which, detoxification was performed for 484 students, addiction status was determined for 181 students, and 68 students were treated beyond the prescribed level at Hospital A. In addition, the facility treated more than 4,800 people with common diseases, with a total of 83 students receiving ARV treatment.

Students in drug rehabilitation facilities in the province are all involved in vocational training and occupational therapy activities.

At the facility, we met patient NV H, residing in Dong Tien Ward (Pho Yen City). Since the age of 18, Mr. H. went to work in wood in Dien Bien and listened to the people there to use drugs to improve his health. After a while, he became addicted, the frequency and dosage of drug use increased. When he did not use drugs, he felt very tired, restless, and very uncomfortable.

Mr. NV H: Since entering the rehabilitation facility, I have been treated by the medical staff here and have overcome the difficult period of withdrawal. Currently, my health has gradually stabilized and I no longer feel as uncomfortable as before. Hopefully, after this rehabilitation, I will be able to resolutely say no to drugs and start my life over.

Along with this facility, the province currently has 6 public drug rehabilitation facilities with more than 1,000 compulsory and voluntary students. With the spirit of "drug addicts are patients" and "drug rehabilitation facilities are places for treatment", in recent times, drug addiction treatment facilities in the province have treated and cared for drug addicts in accordance with the spirit of "Come to be treated, not to be isolated".

In order for students to have jobs after reintegrating into the community, avoid relapse, after being treated for withdrawal, detoxification, and health recovery, students in rehabilitation facilities are all involved in vocational training, job transfer, and occupational therapy activities, with occupations such as folding paper bags, making brooms, growing vegetables, making wigs, rattan chairs, etc. These activities not only help students improve their health, but also have a positive awareness of drug addiction, and also equip them with a career so that after reintegrating into the community, students have more opportunities to find jobs and make ends meet.

In 2024, the province organized drug rehabilitation for over 1,000 people, exceeding the plan by 26.9%. Of these, 425 cases were implemented in the form of compulsory drug rehabilitation at the Thai Nguyen Provincial Multi-Functional Drug Rehabilitation Center, the rest were voluntary participants at treatment facilities. This has helped hundreds of people control and gradually reduce their dependence on drugs.

Based on the initial results, the Provincial Police are continuing to reorganize the apparatus and perfect the operating regulations of drug rehabilitation facilities to achieve the set goals. Thereby, improving the effectiveness of rehabilitation, post-rehabilitation management, limiting the emergence of new addicts as well as strictly controlling addicts in society, ensuring security, order and a safe living environment.
