Preserving traditional occupations, sustainable poverty reduction

“Leaving the countryside but not leaving the homeland”. That is the spirit of many young people in the Ancestral Land today. Instead of leaving their hometown to start a business elsewhere, they choose to stay, continue their ancestors’ traditional occupations, create income, stable livelihoods, reduce poverty and limit falling back into poverty in a sustainable way. Encouraging young people to continue traditional occupations is a new direction of the Viet Tri City Youth Union in activities contributing to sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh and his wife, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi, are the third generation of the Ninh Hang banh chung and banh giay brand (Hung Lo commune, Viet Tri city).

Ninh Hang Chung cake and Giay cake are famous brands from Hung Lo commune, Viet Tri city. The family has three generations of making Chung cake and Giay cake, with over 10 years of experience making cakes to offer to the Hung Kings on the annual Hung King's death anniversary. Mr. Nguyen Van Ninh is the head of the Chung cake and Giay cake making village in Hung Lo commune. Like many families with a long-standing traditional profession, they are always concerned about their successors.

Fortunately, Mr. Ninh's son, Nguyen Thanh Binh, and daughter-in-law, Nguyen Thi Loi, chose to continue the traditional profession, establishing the third generation of making cakes for the King of the famous Ke Xom banh chung and banh giay brands. Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi said: "Following this profession is definitely hard. Every day, we wake up at 3 am. Young people like us want to continue and preserve the long-standing traditional profession of our ancestors."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi hopes to continue her parents' traditional profession with her husband.

In fact, many young people have chosen to give up high-paying jobs to return to their hometowns to start businesses, develop traditional crafts, generate income for their families, and contribute to local poverty reduction. A typical example is the Hung Lo rice noodle brand, of which Cao Dang Duy is the director.

10 years ago, young man Cao Dang Duy was troubled when he saw the rice noodle making profession in his hometown gradually disappearing. The profession that had existed for hundreds of years, feeding many generations of Hung Lo people, now only a few women and the elderly knew how to make it. Pitying the “white rice noodles”, Mr. Duy came up with the idea of making noodles, packaging them beautifully and selling them throughout the province as well as the country.

After many difficulties in the early days of starting a business, Hung Lo rice noodles have become a famous brand of the Land of Ancestors. Not only is it a 4-star OCOP product of Phu Tho, Hung Lo rice noodles have also been exported to the Japanese market. From the initial small factory until now, Hung Lo rice noodles have produced dozens of tons of finished products each month, creating stable jobs for 20 local workers. The dream of bringing rice noodles born in the village "overseas" has come true, adding confidence to young people who nurture the ambition of starting a business from the traditional profession of their ancestors.

Viet Tri City Youth Union continues to promote its role in supporting youth in economic development through many practical activities such as: Training on transferring scientific and technological advances to youth; maintaining and building models of cooperatives, cooperatives, and "Youth doing business" clubs; connecting and supporting loan sources; continuing to effectively use capital from the National Employment Fund and capital from the Social Policy Bank, promptly inspecting and reviewing the use of capital, recovering capital and resolving problems in implementation and use.

Hung Lo rice noodle brand is increasingly known by many people not only for its quality but also for its beautiful packaging.

Comrade Dao Manh Hoang - Secretary of Viet Tri City Youth Union said: "In the coming time, the City Youth Union will continue to coordinate with units to provide career orientation and vocational training for young people, build awareness of lifelong learning as well as life skills for young people to prepare for the requirements of industrialization and modernization of the homeland and locality".

The younger generation continues the traditional profession of the previous generation, developing a profession suitable for modern times, not only bringing economic benefits but also preserving and conserving the culture and rich history of the family and homeland. This is a lesson that localities need to study to encourage and "retain" young people to develop the economy and get rich on their homeland.
