Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Pope Francis was hospitalized after suffering from bronchitis for more than a week without improvement. The Pope's work schedule was forced to be canceled at least until Monday (February 17), according to AP on February 15.

After being hospitalized, the head of the Holy See was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and a fever, Mr. Bruni added.

The Pope began having difficulty breathing and was diagnosed with bronchitis on February 6. However, he continued his daily work and presided over Sunday Mass (February 9). On February 12, the Pope was unable to read his speech and had to have an assistant read it for him during the general audience.

On February 14, the Pope appeared pale and edematous, due to the bronchitis medication that causes fluid retention.

CNN Vatican correspondent Christopher Lamb said that Pope Francis was conscious but had difficulty speaking due to difficulty breathing during an event on the morning of February 14. Later that day, the Pope was taken to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

On the morning of February 14, the Vatican confirmed that the Pope met a total of five guests, including Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"The Pope is very calm, in good spirits and reading some newspapers," AFP quoted Mr. Bruni after the Pope was hospitalized.

The Pope spent an uneventful night in hospital and his fever was gone, the Vatican news agency ANSA reported. "The new treatment, which was started on February 14, has shown positive progress," ANSA added.

The last time Pope Francis was hospitalized was in June 2023, when he underwent surgery to remove scar tissue in his intestines and a hernia. The Gemelli Hospital has a private treatment room for the head of the Holy See.
