The sugarcane fields of farmers in Tan Lam commune, Xuyen Moc district, although ready for harvest, have not been cut down for sale because there are no buyers. |
It has been 3 months since the harvest, but Mr. Cao Van Thang, Bau Ham hamlet, Tan Lam commune, still cannot cut down 11 hectares of sugarcane to sell. The reason is that there are no traders coming to buy.
“My family rents the land for sugarcane cultivation for 25-27 million VND/ha/year. Including the land rent and investment costs, this crop cost 170 million VND/ha. This sugarcane crop is considered a heavy loss,” Mr. Thang said sadly.
Not far away, the sugarcane field of Mr. Nguyen Huu Dung, also residing in Tan Lam commune, is in a similar situation. 10 hectares of sugarcane are 3 months past the harvest time, but so far only about 1 hectare has been sold. The remaining sugarcane has also fallen in large numbers due to unseasonal rain and strong winds.
According to Mr. Dung, the price of sugarcane this year is only 50-60 thousand VND/bundle of 12 stalks, down more than 20 thousand VND/bundle compared to the same period last year. Not only has the price dropped sharply, but consumption is also very slow, making sugarcane growers restless. “Unsold sugarcane, overripe, will affect the quality. Sugarcane with spongy and red flesh, reduced sugar content will be harder to sell, and even abandoned. In this situation, we are suffering heavy losses,” said Mr. Dung.
Along with sugarcane, cassava products in Tan Lam commune also fell into a situation of low prices and difficult consumption.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Huynh is growing 5 hectares of cassava. Up to now, cassava has entered the main harvest season, but the price has dropped to rock bottom, the lowest in more than 10 years, currently only 1,800 VND/kg. "I invested about 150 million VND/5 hectares in this cassava crop. The cassava is past the harvest time but I still haven't sold any kilos because there are no traders asking to buy," said Mr. Huynh.
Faced with the above difficulties, many farmers in Tan Lam commune wish to establish a commune group or production cooperative associated with product consumption linkage so that people can feel secure in production and have stable output and consumption.
Mr. Le Van Loi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tan Lam Commune, Xuyen Moc District, said that the commune currently has over 50 hectares of sugarcane and about 80 hectares of cassava. Low prices and slow consumption have greatly affected product quality and people's income.
“In the face of this situation, the commune government is encouraging people not to massively switch to a single crop on a large area. Farmers can intercrop or rotate crops on the same area of land to make output easier, avoiding the situation of “good harvest, low price, good price, bad harvest”, Mr. Loi said.
