Steel prices on the exchange

Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery rose 2 yuan to 3,702 yuan/tonne.

Iron ore futures fell after a series of weaker-than-expected economic data in top consumer China and as floods and high temperatures in the country clouded the outlook for demand in the near term.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 fell 1.81% to 811.5 yuan ($111.85) a tonne.

Benchmark iron ore for July delivery SZZFN4 on the Singapore Exchange fell 2.33% to $105 a tonne.

A series of weaker-than-expected data in the property sector, China's biggest steel consumer, weighed on market sentiment, even as policymakers redoubled efforts to support the ailing sector and shore up consumer confidence.

China's real estate investment fell 10.1% in the first five months of 2024 from a year earlier, after falling 9.8% in the January-April period, statistics bureau data showed.

Meanwhile, China's new home prices fell at their fastest pace in more than nine and a half years in May.

This comes after new bank lending in China rebounded much less than expected in May and several key currency gauges hit record lows, suggesting the world's second-largest economy is still struggling to regain its footing.

Floods in southern regions and high temperatures also reduced demand for steel products.

Other steelmaking raw materials on the DCE also fell, with coking coal DJMcv1 and coking coal DCJcv1 down 1.73% and 1.15% respectively.

Benchmark steel futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange edged up slightly but were generally weaker. Rebar SRBcv1 fell 0.85%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 fell 0.89%, rebar SWRcv1 fell 0.9% and stainless steel SHSScv1 fell 0.72%.

Separately, China's crude steel output in May rose 8.1% month-on-month and 2.7% year-on-year on improved domestic demand and strong exports.
