Quang Ngai plans to reclaim the sea to build Ly Son airport

The Department of Construction of Quang Ngai province has just announced the plan to build an airport on Ly Son island.

According to the Department of Construction, the Planning orientation of Quang Ngai province for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 (approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1456/QD-TTg dated November 22, 2023) clearly states: "Research and develop airports at potential locations such as Ly Son island district when ensuring the prescribed conditions."

The general planning for the construction of Dung Quat Economic Zone until 2045 determines that Ly Son airport will be a dual-use airport, meeting 4C standards, capable of handling A320, A321 and equivalent aircraft. The scale of service is from 3 million to 3.5 million passengers/year.

In Decision No. 454/QD-UBND dated June 20, 2024, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province approved the 1/2000 scale construction zoning plan for Ly Son island, determining the airport area to be about 161.74 hectares, of which 127.94 hectares is the sea encroachment area in An Hai commune.

According to the Department of Construction of Quang Ngai province, the current area of ​​Ly Son island is not large and the population density is quite high, so to ensure the technical parameters of the airport, ensure the safety of aircraft when taking off, landing and essential infrastructure serving the airport, it is necessary to have a sea encroachment planning plan. This solution is consistent with the planning orientation of the province and is specifically determined in the approved general planning and zoning plan for the construction of Ly Son island.

In addition to building Ly Son airport, Quang Ngai province will also develop infrastructure systems, services, logistics centers, transportation networks and train lines connecting the airport terminal with functional areas on the island.
