Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for September 2025 delivery rose 4 yuan to 3,336 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures rose for a second straight session, as concerns about weather-related supply disruptions in key supplier Australia outweighed uncertainty over new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.
The most-traded iron ore contract for May delivery on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.79% to 827.5 yuan ($113.24) a tonne. The contract hit its highest since Dec. 10 at 830.5 yuan a tonne earlier in the session.
Benchmark iron ore for March delivery on the Singapore Exchange rose 0.35% to $107.55 a tonne, its highest since Oct. 10, 2024.
The operator of Australia's Port Hedland iron ore export hub, which is home to major producers BHP Group, Fortescue and Hancock Prospecting, has begun clearing ships from the port following a weather warning from the Bureau of Meteorology.
This comes after top supplier Rio Tinto cleared ships from two Western Australian ports last week, contributing to a sharp drop in exports during the period, traders said.
However, gains were capped by uncertainty over threats of new tariffs that significantly increased steel and aluminum import duties on Monday to a flat 25% “with no exceptions or exemptions” in a move aimed at supporting struggling industries but raising the risk of a trade war on multiple fronts.
The tariffs would apply to millions of tons of steel and aluminum imported from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and other countries that enter the United States duty-free under duty-free provisions.
