Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for September 2025 delivery fell 25 yuan to 3,327 yuan/t.

The most-traded May iron ore contract on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) closed at 812 yuan a tonne, up 1.10%. Traders showed little enthusiasm for selling.

Steel mills were more cautious and trading activity was moderate. Benchmark iron ore for March delivery on the Singapore Exchange rose 0.76 percent to $107.15 a tonne.

Average daily hot metal output, often used to gauge iron ore demand, rose 1.3% from a pre-Chinese Lunar New Year holiday assessment to 2.28 million tonnes as of Feb. 5 among steelmakers surveyed, data from consultancy Mysteel showed.

Shipments from top suppliers Australia and Brazil fell 32% to 18.98 million tonnes in the week ended Feb. 9 from the previous week, boosting sentiment, Mysteel data showed.

This helped iron ore prices overcome earlier losses caused by risk aversion after the US threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, on top of existing metals tariffs, in another major escalation in his trade policy overhaul.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE traded mixed, with coking coal up 0.13% and coking coal down 1.72%.

Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were weaker. Rebar fell 0.89%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.49%, wire rod fell 0.53% and stainless steel fell 0.48%.
