High interest
In 2023, the price of live pigs will remain low, with the national average being 53,800 VND/kg. Meanwhile, the cost of 1 kg of live pigs ranges from 45,000-52,000 VND/kg. With the above price, farmers have almost no profit, even losses. Starting in 2024, the price of live pigs tends to increase, especially from April onwards, recording a sharp increase, at times in late May and early June, the price of live pigs reached 70,000 VND/kg. Many farmers in the province said that this is the highest price in the past 3 years (since October 2021) in Hai Duong.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dac Viem, Director of Hung Huy Breeding and Livestock Equipment Joint Stock Company in Dinh Son Commune (Cam Giang), the company is currently raising 4,000 pigs, with an average of 700-1,000 pigs supplied to the market each month. Currently, the general price of animal feed has decreased by about 600-700 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. The decrease in input costs while the price of live pigs has increased is a great joy for livestock farmers. Because in the past 2 years, they have faced many difficulties when the price of animal feed increased, while the purchase price was low. Mr. Viem said: "With the price ranging from 68,000-70,000 VND/kg of live pigs, each pig weighing 100 kg will bring a profit of 2.2-2.5 million VND. Hung Huy Breeding and Livestock Equipment Joint Stock Company mainly supplies pigs for the northern provinces. Currently, consumption is going well." Mr. Viem predicts that with the current market situation, the price of live pigs may stabilize at a high level in the next few months.
Mr. Vuong Trong Trieu has two pig farms in Tu Cuong (Thanh Mien) and Quang Phuc (Tu Ky) communes. Currently, his farm has 800 pigs, of which about 300 are in the selling stage. According to Mr. Trieu, the price of live pigs usually fluctuates every 15-20 days. The current price ranges from 67,000-68,000 VND/kg. In the coming time, the price may fluctuate but will most likely stabilize at over 65,000 VND/kg. With this price, farmers earn high profits.
The increase in the price of live pigs has led to an increase in the price of piglets. For many years, Mr. Pham Van Hung in Thang Long commune (Kinh Mon) has had a farm supplying piglets. On average, this farm supplies about 800 piglets per month. Currently, the price of piglets is at 1.9-2 million VND/pig (weighing about 7kg), an increase of 400,000-500,000 VND/pig compared to the beginning of the year. Due to the increase in the price of live pigs, the price of pork at traditional markets in the province has increased significantly. Specifically, pork butt costs 110,000 VND/kg, shoulder meat costs 120,000-130,000 VND/kg, pork belly costs 140,000-145,000 VND/kg, ribs cost 130,000-145,000 VND/kg... These prices have increased by 15,000-20,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of 2024.
Be careful when restocking
According to the law, the price of live pigs usually decreases in the summer when consumer demand decreases compared to the cold weather, many collective kitchens at schools are closed during the summer vacation. However, this year the pork market has had irregular developments. The increase in live pigs comes from the reason that supply cannot meet demand. After a period of African swine fever in localities with a lot of pigs, causing a large number of pigs to be destroyed, many households and farm owners left their barns empty, causing a shortage of supply nationwide.
According to the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, as of early June, Hai Duong's total pig herd reached 439,422, up 4.9% over the same period in 2023, of which the meat pig herd reached 299,820, up 5.2%. The output of live pigs for slaughter in May is estimated at 5,955 tons, up 5.2%. Although the total pig herd and meat output of the province have increased, they are still not enough to meet demand.
However, the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine still recommends that at this time, farmers need to be careful, calculate carefully, and base on the supply and demand of the market before re-herding or expanding the scale of breeding, especially small-scale breeders, to avoid the situation of massive re-herding. Because the market has many complicated developments, massive re-herding can cause an imbalance in supply and demand and then breeders will have to suffer losses.
When restocking, farmers need to choose breeds with clear origins and quarantine certificates. Fully vaccinate, take good care, follow the correct procedures, ensure biosafety in livestock farming, and focus on disease prevention and control. Link product consumption to achieve effective livestock farming...
