In the South, the market on March 17 showed a fairly stable situation, but some localities still had slight downward adjustments.

Most provinces such as Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Ca Mau, Tien Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre and Soc Trang kept the price at 80,000 VND/kg. Only Can Tho and Hau Giang maintained a higher price, reaching 81,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Long An and Tra Vinh recorded a decrease of VND 1,000/kg, bringing the price to VND 80,000/kg.

Factors affecting pig prices

The live hog market has continued to be affected by changes in supply and demand in recent days. Although domestic supply remains abundant, the slight decrease in selling prices reflects market saturation. Experts say that the price of live hogs in the coming time may be affected by factors such as weather, disease and unstable consumption.

In addition, feed prices and management policies of authorities also play an important role in price fluctuations. Currently, many livestock farmers are not in a hurry to sell due to the falling prices, instead choosing to hold on to their stocks and wait for a recovery opportunity. However, this may cause market transactions to be quieter in the near future.

Faced with this situation, livestock businesses and consumers need to proactively monitor market developments, while paying attention to influencing factors such as disease, weather, and domestic and foreign consumption demand.

Comments from experts

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Head of the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Aquatic Products Station of Tu Son City, Bac Ninh Province, commented: "Although pig prices have increased, farmers need to be cautious in herd restoration."

According to Mr. Long, the market will soon be regulated again thanks to the supply from large enterprises, so the current price increase may not last long. Meanwhile, the price of breeding animals and animal feed remains high, making the production cost of the livestock industry quite high. Therefore, farms need to calculate carefully before re-herding, based on market demand, livestock farming capacity and epidemic prevention work.

He also recommended that before restocking, farms should pay attention to cleaning and disinfecting barns, ensuring a well-ventilated environment, avoiding dampness and leaks. At the same time, it is necessary to use disinfectants, lime powder and specialized cleaning equipment to minimize the risk of disease transmission.

Regarding breeding animals, farmers need to choose a reputable supplier with a certificate of disease safety. After entering the barn, it is necessary to ensure a reasonable diet, clean water source and complete vaccination against African swine fever, blue ear disease, foot and mouth disease, etc.

Currently, the total pig herd in the province remains stable at about 300,200, including 25,701 farrowing sows, 9,775 gilts, 539 boars, 204,166 meat pigs and 60,043 piglets.

There are a total of 222 pig farms in the area, including 48 large-scale farms, 58 medium-scale farms and 116 small-scale farms.

To ensure sustainable livestock farming, households should shift their farming model away from residential areas, towards biosafety. Using biological products in care and disease prevention will help limit risks and optimize production costs.

In addition, taking advantage of available feed sources will help reduce costs, improve economic efficiency and proactively adapt to market fluctuations, while contributing to protecting the livestock environment.
