Recently, at the Rubber Stakeholders Forum held in Upulima, Papua New Guinea, the President of the Papua New Guinea Rubber Council (PNG) - Ms. Josephine Kenni said that once the national rubber policy is implemented, all issues related to the rubber industry will be resolved. Ms. Kenni was the keynote speaker at the event, which gathered a large number of rubber farmers, government officials and development partners.
During the day-long meeting, farmer representatives expressed concerns about poor road conditions leading to difficulties in transporting rubber, limited market access, lack of training, lack of extension services and breakdown in communication between rubber industry stakeholders.
In response, Ms Kenni said the Rubber Council was well aware of the problems faced by farmers. The government is currently in the process of developing a national rubber policy, along with a new Rubber Industry Act, to lay the foundation for the development of the rubber industry in Papua New Guinea.
“In 2022, we developed the Papua New Guinea Rubber Industry Act. After two years, we have a draft rubber policy that is being implemented,” said Ms. Kenni.
“Once the rubber policy is passed, we can discuss the next steps. The law is now in parliament,” she added.
She also noted that the rubber industry has been recovering over the past two years thanks to the tireless efforts of a small group of people to promote rubber development in PNG. “We have a new structure plan for the rubber industry, approved by the Ministry of Human Resources, along with a new law,” said Ms Kenni.
She also said that under this new structure, there will be more agricultural extension officers, and the Rubber Industry Development Council will conduct regular inspections.
Under the national rubber policy, issues of rubber production, quality, infrastructure, market access, exports and technical standards will be addressed. In addition, the Rubber Council is working closely with the National Institute of Industrial Standards and Technology (NISIT) to develop standards for the rubber industry in Papua New Guinea.
