Coffee price today March 30: Factors pushing it to the 'top of the roof'

Although coffee prices today are not at a record level, they are still at the "peak" price range, up 200-300% compared to 2 years ago.

Today (March 30), the updated coffee price in the domestic market is 132,300 VND/kg, unchanged from the previous session, although the coffee price on the London - UK exchange in the next session decreased from 7-15 USD/ton (from 177 - 380 VND/kg).

Coffee prices for May 2025 delivery are currently at $5,337/ton for Robusta and $8,380/ton for Arabica.

According to Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep, Vice President of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vinh Hiep Company Limited - a leading coffee exporter in Vietnam, global coffee prices are being pushed up not only because of climate change causing coffee crop failure.

In fact, in the previous crop year, global coffee exports continued to increase (except for Vietnam). By this crop year, the cumulative coffee exports of Brazil, the world's number 1 coffee exporter, by February 2025 (nearly half of the crop year) increased by 10.15% over the same period, reaching more than 1.65 million tons.

That means, the world's demand for coffee imports is increasing faster than the ability of exporting countries to meet it.

The reason is believed to be due to logistics congestion and the trend of increasing imports from previous months to avoid the impact of the European Union's anti-deforestation law (EUDR) which is about to take effect on December 30, 2025.

Europe is the world's largest coffee import market. For the Vietnamese coffee industry alone, the EU accounts for more than 40% of the market share, counting only the direct imports, not to mention the goods whose destination is also the EU but are transferred through a third country.

According to Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep, coffee importers usually take 6 months to transport and process raw coffee into finished products on supermarket shelves, so they must import goods early to be confirmed as purchased before the EUDR takes effect.

Also due to "avoiding" the EUDR, EU importers have massively imported coffee from Brazil, pushing up the price of Arabica coffee because this source of supply is at great risk of not meeting the EUDR. The sharp increase in Arabica prices has also pushed Robusta coffee prices to new peaks.

Even in Vietnam, although it is assessed to have complied well with EUDR regulations, Vietnam has closed its forests before the EU's prescribed time, but the paperwork and procedures to prove it are still a concern.

Therefore, the concern that Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep raised close to the time EUDR takes effect is that coffee without EUDR certification will be forced to lower its price.
