'Attaching' Nguyen Huy Thiep street sign at Thiep ceramic exhibition

A cobalt blue sign, with the white letters Nguyen Huy Thiep Street. That is one of the works that sculptor Dinh Cong Dat brought to the Thiep Ceramics exhibition (from now until April 20 at 22 Hang Buom, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi). That is how Mr. Dat expressed his desire to have a Nguyen Huy Thiep Street in Hanoi.

In other works, Mr. Dat still brings in his characteristic drawing style, with colored squares placed next to each other in an impromptu manner. He also chooses his favorite sentences and titles of works by the writer to put up: "Living is easy", "My mother is a farmer, I was born in the countryside"...

Painter Nguyen Phan Bach, son of writer Nguyen Huy Thiep, said at the Gom Thiep exhibition that many of his works were inspired by sentences in his father's works. "Because one of the unique characteristics of his literary works, from short stories, novels, poems to plays, is the sharp, short dialogues, full of hidden meanings, sparkling with double-sided symbols. This suggests a lot for the creation of images," Nguyen Phan Bach said.

That is why Mr. Thiep's short stories appear in many ceramic works of different authors. There are also authors who use one work or one sentence to create many ceramic works.

Nguyen Huy Thiep ceramic inspiration

With 42 authors and 200 works, it is rare for a ceramic exhibition to gather so many big names in the art world. Among them are Le Thiet Cuong, Dinh Cong Dat, Dao Hai Phong, Ly Tran Quynh Giang, Le Tri Dung... Many of them have gone through the renovation period with Mr. Thiep, especially the renovation of literature and art at the end of the last century.

Mr. Bach also said that during his lifetime, writer Nguyen Huy Thiep loved painting, especially ceramics. He painted his friends, painted special events in his life and called it a conversation with memories. Some of Mr. Thiep's ceramic works were also introduced in the exhibition Gom Thiep .
