According to a VNA correspondent in Switzerland, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) confirmed on December 11 that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup, while the 2030 World Cup will mainly be co-hosted by three countries: Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Notably, the 2030 tournament will mark the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup. As such, Uruguay will host the first match of the 2030 World Cup, as well as the anniversary. Meanwhile, Argentina, runners-up in the 1930 World Cup, and Paraguay, home of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), will also host a match. The remaining matches will be split evenly between Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Spain, which hosted the 1982 World Cup, will be in the spotlight as it owns 11 of the 20 proposed stadiums, while Morocco would become the second African country to host the tournament after South Africa in 2010. Potential venues for the 2030 World Cup final include Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium and Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium.
On the same day, in a statement released after FIFA announced the above information, Saudi Arabia's Sports Minister, Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal al Saud, expressed his joy at the opportunity. He emphasized: "Today is a memorable and proud day. We are ready to invite people from all over the world to Saudi Arabia."
This will be the second time in history that the World Cup will be held in the Middle East. At the most recent World Cup in 2022, Argentina won the championship in Qatar. The upcoming 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
