"The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as a suspect in connection with the attempted murder of former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania," the FBI said in a statement. The FBI determined the shooting at a campaign event for Republican presidential candidate Trump on the evening of July 13 was an attempted murder. "Tonight, we witnessed an attempted murder of former President Donald Trump. It remains an active crime scene," Kevin Rojek, FBI special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh office, said at a news conference in Butler, Pennsylvania. Rojek said the FBI identified the gunman by "conducting biometric verification" because the suspect was not carrying identification. When asked if authorities could determine what type of gun was used by the suspect or how many shots were fired during the attack, Rojek said authorities did not have that information at this time.

Authorities are also investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including reports from witnesses who saw the gunman climbing onto the roof. One witness told BBC News he saw the suspect with a rifle on the roof, and tried to alert police before the incident. The US Secret Service also confirmed that the suspect shot Mr Trump from a "high" position. "There will be a lengthy investigation into exactly what happened and how the subject was able to get to the location and what type of weapon he had. This will all take days, weeks and months of investigation," the FBI official added. The shooting at former President Donald Trump's campaign rally left one attendee dead and two others seriously injured. The gunman was also shot dead by the Secret Service. Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said all three victims were men.
After being escorted off stage by Secret Service and taken to safety, Mr Trump spoke out about the attack and admitted that he "could not believe something like this could happen" in the US. Mr Trump said he was hit by a bullet "through the upper part of his right ear". He "immediately knew something was wrong when he heard a whistling sound, a pop, and then felt the bullet graze his skin". Images released showed blood still flowing from one of Mr Trump's ears as he was escorted off stage by Secret Service agents. CNN quoted a source as saying that Mr Trump's plane landed at Newark Airport in New Jersey this morning, July 14. Earlier, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on the night of July 13 that Mr Trump had left the Butler, Pennsylvania area after the shooting. Mr Trump's deputy campaign communications director, Margo Martin, posted a video of him getting off the plane in Newark. "Strong and resilient. He will never stop fighting for America," Martin commented.
