EVN suggests Can Tho save nearly 65 billion VND in electricity bills

Knocking on every province and city to call for electricity saving

On the afternoon of May 23, representatives of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) had a working session with leaders of Can Tho City People's Committee on ensuring electricity supply in 2023 and promoting the local electricity saving movement.

According to EVN's report, the hot weather, with outdoor temperatures reaching 39 - 40 °C in many places, has caused a record increase in electricity demand and put the power system under great strain. Specifically, on May 19, the power system's operating values ​​set a record. The maximum capacity of the power system reached 44,620 MW.

Mr. Cao Quang Quynh, member of EVN's Board of Members, said that EVN had to assign representatives to each province and city to promote electricity saving.

In Can Tho City, the intense heat has caused a sudden increase in electricity demand. The maximum capacity Pmax in the first 4 months of 2023 was recorded at 481.1 MW, 9.5% higher than the same period in 2022.

The difficulty is even greater when the El Nino drought has caused very low water levels in hydroelectric reservoirs, leading to a serious reduction in the capacity of hydroelectric plants.

Mr. Cao Quang Quynh, member of EVN's Board of Members, said that as of mid-May 2023, all 12/12 large hydropower reservoirs in the Northern region recorded the lowest water flow frequency in the past 100 years. Some large hydropower reservoirs in the South reached dead water levels in early May, seriously affecting the power supply situation.

The electricity industry has implemented many solutions to regulate electricity supply to ensure the security of the power system.

EVN has made efforts to find many solutions to supply electricity, and up to now, the power system has been operating relatively stably. "However, in the coming June and July, the situation is forecast to be very difficult, so EVN has had to establish a steering committee, assigning representatives to each province and city to call for sharing, especially to further promote electricity saving in the area," said Mr. Quynh.

According to Mr. Quynh, in the current context, saving electricity is an extremely important solution. Not only does it contribute to reducing capacity and electricity output, saving electricity will also reduce operational stress, the risk of incidents, ensuring a stable and safe power system.

Can Tho can save nearly 65 billion VND

According to EVN's calculations, Can Tho City currently has 107 customers using 3 million kWh/year or more, with a consumption of 801.389 million kWh in 2022. If these customers save 2% of their total annual electricity consumption, they will save 16.027 million kWh, equivalent to nearly 30 billion VND.

According to EVN, Can Tho City can save up to nearly 35 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to nearly 65 billion VND.

Similarly, with 2,879 administrative and professional customers (excluding hospitals and schools), if they save 10% of their total annual electricity consumption, they will reduce 5.075 million kWh, equivalent to nearly 9.5 billion VND. In addition, public lighting in Can Tho City can also save 10.351 million kWh, equivalent to more than 19 billion VND... EVN believes that if electricity saving is practiced effectively, the entire Can Tho City can reduce the amount of electricity used by up to nearly 35 million kWh, equivalent to nearly 65 billion VND.

Solutions proposed by EVN: Develop plans and implement urgent solutions to save electricity for administrative agencies; commercial centers, service establishments; industrial establishments, production establishments; public lighting systems... Accordingly, it is possible to require all administrative agencies using the state budget to save at least 10% of electricity (not applicable to schools and hospitals); public lighting units apply measures to save 50% of electricity...

Propaganda on electricity saving to people

Agreeing with EVN's proposal, Mr. Nguyen Van Hong, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, said that he will direct departments, branches and localities to seriously implement electricity saving. The leader of Can Tho City People's Committee requested EVN to direct Can Tho Electricity to coordinate with Can Tho Department of Industry and Trade to urgently plan to guide electricity saving.
