The young man with the tragic fate mentioned above is Tran Quoc Tuan (born in 1994, residing in Thanh Noi village, Minh Lang, Vu Thu, Thai Binh).

Main breadwinner for the family, suddenly became disabled

Receiving information about Tuan from the Social Work Department, Central Acupuncture Hospital, we immediately went to the Emergency Resuscitation Department to visit him.

On the hospital bed, the young man lay motionless, his body emaciated, reduced to skin and bones. A tube in his nose helped him feed, and a large scar on his neck was a remnant of the previous tracheotomy he had undergone during emergency treatment.

With tears in her eyes, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chien, born in 1971 (Tuan's biological mother) put her arms around Tuan, leaned close to her son's ear and whispered in great pain:

"Tuan, wake up, son. I haven't heard you speak for over a year. I only have you, if something happens to you, how will I live!...", the heartbreaking "whining" sounds of the poor mother made it hard for anyone to hold back their emotions. I could only stand still, turning my face away to hide the tears that were falling.

Looking up at her haggard, gaunt, wrinkled face, much older than her 52 years, Ms. Chien said:

One day in late October 2022, before dawn, she was awakened by the constant ringing of the phone. Trembling as she answered the phone, the poor mother felt her legs go weak when the other end of the line reported that her son had fallen and suffered a traumatic brain injury and was being taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

"Everyone said that the child fell and hit his head on the road. He must have been too tired from working the night shift, that's why...", the poor mother covered her face and burst into tears.

Sobbing, Ms. Chien said that when Tuan was 2 years old, her husband suddenly became mentally ill. He often beat his wife and children and then left home to wander.

It was not until 2018, thanks to the help of local authorities and social organizations, that Ms. Chien's husband was admitted to the Thai Binh Provincial Rehabilitation Center for Mental Health.

Due to his family's difficult circumstances, Tuan only finished 12th grade and then went to work to take care of his family. The young man, in addition to taking care of his father, did not refuse any job from construction worker, delivery man... Before the accident, Tuan was working as a worker in an industrial park not far from home.

"The boy has had 5 surgeries, the doctor said he is not hopeless, but he will need long-term, expensive treatment. I only have this one child, please help save him!...", Ms. Chien burst into tears like a child.

Doctor calls for help for unfortunate boy

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, Dr. Hoang Thi Mai Huong, Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Central Acupuncture Hospital said: "Patient Tran Quoc Tuan was diagnosed with bilateral hemiplegia due to sequelae of traumatic brain injury."

Doctor Mai Huong added that the patient is currently conscious but unable to communicate, must be fed through a feeding tube, and is incontinent.

When admitted to the hospital, the patient had pneumonia and deep ulcers on his hands, and was physically weak. After treatment, the patient's weakness was gone and the risk of infection was low.

As the person directly campaigning to find funding to help patients, Dr. Truong To Quyen, an officer of the Social Work Department, Central Acupuncture Hospital, said:

"Tuan is young so there is hope for recovery, but he will have to undergo long-term and expensive intensive treatment. Feeding through a tube is also more expensive than usual, and he will also have to use additional drugs to improve his health.

Tuan's family situation is very difficult, a mother with a child, Ms. Chien is weak, in addition to taking care of her child in the hospital, she also has to visit her mentally ill husband.
