Newton - The only private school with students taking the IJSO exam
Vuong Ha Chi and Vu Nhat Long, class 10G0, Newton Secondary and High School, are two students who have just excelled over strong opponents from other countries to bring two prestigious Silver Medals to Vietnam and to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is the most prestigious competition for 15-year-old students, organized by the Ministry of Education and Training of countries around the world. The knowledge of the competition is relatively comprehensive, integrating 3 natural science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology). Candidates participate in the competition in English with 3 tests including: an objective test on general knowledge; a theoretical test requiring synthesis, analysis, and problem-solving skills; a practical test using modern tools and machinery. For over 10 years, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has been trusted by the Ministry of Education and Training and the City People's Committee to select and establish a student delegation to participate in the IJSO competition.
In 2024, IJSO will be held in the Republic of Romania from December 2 to 12 with the participation of more than 303 students from 52 countries and territories. The Hanoi student delegation representing Vietnam has 6 members from 3 high schools: Hanoi - Amsterdam High School, Nguyen Hue High School and Newton High School.
To become official members of the team, Vu Nhat Long and Vuong Ha Chi had to go through a difficult training journey, surpassing nearly 300 excellent students in natural sciences from many high schools in Hanoi and winning first prize in the selection round. Next, the 6 members of the official team had nearly 2 months of intensive training before leaving for the competition in Romania.
With solid knowledge and confidence, Vuong Ha Chi and Vu Nhat Long tried their best and both won Silver Medals, contributing to the excellent achievements of the Vietnamese delegation with 100% of members winning medals, including 5 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal.
Previously, in 2023, Newton Secondary and High School was a rare phenomenon when a student entered the IJSO team, Hoang Pham Minh Khanh, class 10G0. Khanh made a strong impression when he was the first private school student to enter the Vietnamese student team to compete in the International Junior Science Olympiad but achieved the best result of the whole team with a Silver Medal. Accordingly, 100% of the Vietnamese student team members won medals with 1 Silver Medal (by Minh Khanh) and 5 Bronze Medals (by students of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted).
Outstanding achievements of 3 students
Hoang Pham Minh Khanh, Vuong Ha Chi and Vu Nhat Long are excellent students of Newton Secondary and High School. All three students have something in common: they are all excellent students at the city level, passed many specialized wishes to many famous specialized schools but decided to enroll at Newton School. Notably, after studying for a while, all three students found their choice to be the right one.
Specifically, at the city-level excellent student exam for the 2023-2024 school year, Vu Nhat Long was the student who won the title of Valedictorian in Science and Second Prize in Chemistry. In the recent 10th grade exam, he passed the Chemistry major - University of Education High School for Gifted Students and the English major - Foreign Language High School for Gifted Students.
Vuong Ha Chi won first prize in the city-level science competition for excellent students; second prize in the city-level biology competition for excellent students. She also made an impression when she passed her 4 wishes to enter specialized schools: Pedagogy, Natural Sciences, Hanoi - Amsterdam, and Hanoi - Amsterdam dual degree.
Hoang Pham Minh Khanh is an excellent all-round student, good at all subjects such as math, physics, chemistry, biology, English... He won second prize - excellent student of the city in math, second prize - excellent student of the city in science, third prize - excellent student of the city in chemistry (skipping a grade); third prize - excellent student of the city in math (skipping a grade).
In the 10th grade high school exam, Minh Khanh passed many specialized programs of specialized schools at the same time including: specialized math and physics - Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, specialized math and chemistry - High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences.
Faced with so many choices, all 3 students continued to have one more thing in common: the decision to choose the Scholarship Hunting class - Newton School to study 3 years of high school.
Satisfied with choosing Newton Inter-level
Returning from the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO 2024), Vuong Ha Chi shared: I have tried my best and am very proud of the results I have just achieved. For me, the value of the exam is not only academic knowledge but also the 12 days in Romania, I have experienced many places, interacted with many international friends, learned how to take care of myself, and self-regulate my emotions to have the best mood when entering the exam room.
“I am extremely grateful to the school for creating very good conditions for me and my friends during the team training period. Without the school's thorough investment, I could not have achieved the results I have today. Returning from the IJSO exam with a Silver Medal, at Noi Bai International Airport, I was warmly welcomed by the teachers in the Board of Directors and the Board of Management of Newton School. Principal Hoang Thi Man congratulated me and hugged me tightly. I am very happy and feel that choosing to study at Newton School was really the right decision” - Vuong Ha Chi said.
“Indeed, with the door wide open, choosing a school for Khanh to study at high school was not easy. However, through learning about the model, Khanh and his parents were attracted by the modern educational program of the Newton System. Newton School is always close, caring, has a clear roadmap and creates opportunities for students to not only learn knowledge according to their abilities but also create opportunities for them to develop many skills comprehensively, especially with a great foreign language learning environment. Up to now, both the family and the child feel that choosing Newton is suitable,” said Ms. Pham Minh, Minh Khanh’s mother.
According to Ms. Pham Minh, at G0 Newton class, children are given very good conditions to satisfy their passion and have a wide path for development. For Minh Khanh, this is a solid foundation for her child to develop her abilities and gradually realize her dreams in the future.
Sharing the reason for choosing Newton as a learning environment for his children among many other modern schools in the capital, Mr. Nguyen Mau Dung - Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Parents Association of Newton Secondary and High School affirmed: “We, the parents, are happy and joyful to see our children grow up and develop at a happy school. There, our children are loved by teachers like their own children and always feel that every day at school is a happy day. For us, choosing Newton for our children to accompany and conquer the future is the right decision…”.
