Don't turn class competition scores into students' fear.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/01/2024

Through investigation, the teacher learned that students were afraid that their class's competition scores would be low, falling in rank compared to last week, and that they would be scolded by their homeroom teacher. Colleagues complained that "the competition is too heavy now, not only for teachers but also for students."

When I was a student, I was fortunate to have many teachers who did not place much importance on class rankings, but there were also five homeroom teachers who placed too much importance on competition, and class time suddenly became extremely scary for students who broke the rules or had their names in the class book. Not only that, the whole class had to endure the teacher's anger and criticism during the entire weekend class time.

Building school regulations is necessary to ensure seriousness and order in education. From there, students are trained to have qualities of self-awareness and discipline. In addition, building and launching emulation movements is to create motivation to help students strive when there is competition and comparison with other classes in the school.

However, the effects of focusing too much on competition, while ignoring the true value of education, also cause negative effects in schools.

Some schools use class competition results to evaluate homeroom teachers.

First, some schools use the class's competition results to evaluate the homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers whose classes are at the bottom of the group have their competition points deducted at the end of the year, are criticized and reminded from meeting to meeting, and sometimes become examples: "Ms. A's class was like this last year, Mr. B's class was like that last year... teachers must avoid it."

Such pressure from above makes some homeroom teachers frustrated. Even though they know that their mistakes are not serious, they cannot hold back and vent their frustrations and anger on their students, creating a tense atmosphere, sometimes leading to excessive and offensive words and actions. Teachers even have conflicts with their colleagues because they think that their homeroom teachers are too strict or not objective in their evaluation of their homeroom classes.

Second, creating too much competitive pressure leads to some bad and anti-educational behaviors for students.

Fearing that their class will lose points, that they will be criticized or disciplined by their homeroom teacher, many students resort to methods such as making friends with the red star team, paying for their friends' meals to avoid being recorded, cheating on tests, even finding ways to "destroy" their class notebooks... and countless other ways. All of this goes against the most important value for education - honesty.

Evaluation and organization of competition among students will be effective if it stops at the level of rewarding groups and individuals with good achievements.

Third, it is unfair to evaluate students' conduct based on their ranking. Because if just one student violates the rules frequently, it will cause the class to fall to the bottom group. This causes other students to be "affected" and lose their good conduct. Or a teacher who performs well in professional work, but just because the class leader is low, will have his/her competition points deducted, be evaluated low or be criticized.

The evaluation and organization of competitions among students will be effective if we stop at the level of rewarding groups and individuals with good achievements, and use them as exemplary models, encouraging students to be active in studying, participating in cultural and sports activities. This will reduce unnecessary pressure and stress in schools, helping the school environment become more friendly and happier.
