On October 14, information from Long An Electricity Company said that it is coordinating with the Department of Industry and Trade of this province to consider handling the violation of a resident in Tan Thanh district, Long An, when this person controlled an unmanned aircraft (drone) to crash into the high-voltage power grid, causing a mass power outage.
The drone, believed to be used for spraying pesticides, crashed into the main conductor of the Cai Lay - Tan Thanh 110kV line at 5:27 p.m. on October 13.
This incident caused a power outage on the 110kV Cai Lay - Tan Thanh line and two 110kV transformer stations in Moc Hoa and Vinh Hung districts (Long An), causing 76,000 households and units in Tan Thanh, Moc Hoa, Vinh Hung, Tan Hung districts and Kien Tuong town to also lose power.
By 10:41 p.m. the same day, the problem was completely resolved, restoring power to the entire electrical system along the line that was hit by the drone.
The drone operator has also been fined. Currently, the Department of Industry and Trade of Long An province, the unit in charge of protecting the safety corridor of the high-voltage power grid, is in the process of reviewing the level of violation to handle it according to regulations.
In 2024, Long An Power Company said it worked with 148 customers who owned drones to warn about high-voltage grid safety when using flying devices.
In addition, along 110kV residential roads, drone prohibition signs have been placed, and weekly propaganda has been coordinated through local radio stations, etc.
According to the Southern Power Corporation, in 2024, there were 2 power grid incidents caused by unmanned aerial vehicles such as drones and flycams violating safety distances, causing electrical discharges.
