The dollar fell in a subdued session on Tuesday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivered dovish comments that suggested the US central bank is likely to begin its easing cycle later this year.
Mr Powell, speaking at a monetary policy conference in Portugal, said the US economy had made significant progress on inflation as it returned to a deflationary path. Analysts said his comments were seen as dovish.
The Fed’s top official’s comments overshadowed data showing U.S. job growth in May after posting big declines in the previous two months. Employment, a measure of labor demand, rose by 221,000 to 8.14 million on the last day of May, according to the Employment and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 7.910 million jobs opening in May. April data was revised lower to show 7.919 million unfilled positions instead of the previously reported 8.059 million.
"Powell didn't really say anything new, but I think he was a little dovish," said Erik Bregar, director of forex and precious metals risk management at Silver Gold Bull in Toronto, adding that Powell's comments had sent the dollar down a bit.
"But I think the JOLTS report wasn't as strong as it looked. The April number was revised down and so the market is trying to get out of the JOLTS report. That's why the dollar wasn't as high as it initially was after the release."
Following the JOLTS report and Powell’s comments, US interest rate futures were pricing in a 69% chance of a rate cut in September, up from around 63% on Monday, according to LSEG calculations. The market has also priced in one to two rate cuts by 2024.
The Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against six other currencies, was down 0.16% to 105.73.
However, the Dollar has been supported overall recently by the continued rise in Treasury yields.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose nearly 14 basis points (bps) to 4.479 percent overnight, as analysts linked the rise to expectations that Donald Trump will win the US presidential election, leading to higher tariffs and more government borrowing.
On Tuesday, the yield on the 10-year note fell, down 4.3 basis points to 4.435 percent.
