Before flowing into the sea, the Thu Bon River has a small branch flowing through Hoi An with the name of Hoai River. The Hoai River has become the symbol of a World Cultural Heritage in Quang Nam Province - Hoi An Ancient Town. The gentle little river used to witness the hustle and bustle of a port city and today, on the riverbed, boats still go up and down to take visitors to Hoi An.
Looking from above, we will see a long silk strip across the territory of Quang Nam province, that is the Thu Bon River. The river originates from the vast wilderness of Ngoc Linh mountain range in Kon Tum province. Before flowing into the sea at Cua Dai, the flow has a long journey across the land of Quang Nam.
The upper part of the river starts from Dak Glei district and flows north through the midland districts of Quang Nam province such as Nam Tra My, Bac Tra My, Tien Phuoc, and Hiep Duc. As it passes through this area, the river is supplemented with many tributaries from small rivers and streams. The section flowing through Tien Phuoc and Hiep Duc is known as the "Tranh River".
In Duy Xuyen and Dai Loc, the river is supplemented with the Vu Gia River and is called Thu Bon River. Finally, the river flows into the East Sea at Dai estuary. Before flowing into the sea, the "Mother River" also creates a number of small branches such as Truong Giang River, Co Co River and Hoai River.
In addition to its long history and many sub-rivers, the Thu Bon River is also one of the inland rivers with the largest basin in our country up to now. The river's basin area is up to 10,350km², mainly concentrated in Quang Nam province and a small part of Kon Tum, Da Nang, and Quang Ngai provinces. With the advantage of a large basin, the Thu Bon River has annually deposited alluvium on this sunny and windy Central strip of land, creating economic prosperity and traditional cultural values.
If you are planning to visit the Thu Bon River, pay attention to the appropriate time to avoid being affected by the weather. You should limit your travel between October and December, because this is the rainy season in Quang Nam and the water level on the river can rise, making it dangerous to travel. Instead, the time from March to August is the most ideal time. The weather at this time is usually very nice, cool and with little rain. You can sit on a boat to admire the scenery on both sides of the river, enjoy memorable moments and save the best memories.
