The match between Vietnam and Indonesia was crucial to the third place in Group D. The performance in the opening match against Japan gave the Vietnamese team more confidence. However, the match turned out to be the opposite of what fans had expected. Coach Philippe Troussier and his team left the home fans with a feeling of utter disappointment.
Vietnam team lost.
After the opening whistle, the Vietnamese team was continuously pressured by the Indonesian team. In fact, the time of ball control between the two teams was not different. However, the Vietnamese team could not bring the ball to the opponent's field under great pressure from the Indonesian forward players.
On the other side of the front line, the Indonesian team played strongly and passionately but not really sharp. They rarely created good enough chances to score. The Indonesian midfielders lacked quality passes to solve the situation on the field.
The Vietnamese team suffered a bitter defeat.
The first truly dangerous move of the match belonged to the Indonesian team. In the 37th minute, Sandy Walsh headed the ball dangerously after a cross from his teammate, but Nguyen Filip made an excellent save. The turning point of the match came in the 40th minute. Center-back Nguyen Thanh Binh pulled Rafael Struick's shirt in the penalty area. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. VAR technology showed that the Vietnamese player had committed a very rough foul.
Asnawi Mangkualam successfully kicked the penalty and opened the score for the Indonesian team. The remaining time of the first half was not enough for the Vietnamese team to turn the situation around. In the second half, the efforts of the Vietnamese team brought a few dangerous opportunities.
In just the first 7 minutes of the second half, substitute Khuat Van Khang had 2 notable opportunities. He was very close to the opponent's goal but his shots could not beat goalkeeper Ari. In the 55th minute, Minh Trong passed the ball very well and Tuan Anh rushed in to finish but the ball unfortunately went wide.
However, these were also rare notable moments of the Vietnamese team. The Indonesian players quickly regained control of the game and played solidly on their home field. The hopes of coach Troussier and his team were significantly reduced when Le Pham Thanh Long received a second yellow card in the 90+2 minute. Before that, Thanh Binh was easily surpassed by Marselino Ferdinan.
In the end, the Vietnamese team lost 0-1 to Indonesia. After 8 years (since the first leg of the AFF Cup 2016 semi-final), the Vietnamese team experienced the feeling of defeat against the opponent of the archipelago. This defeat also caused Coach Troussier and his team to be officially eliminated from the Asian Cup.
