On the morning of December 26, the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City opened the program "Ho Chi Minh City Network Information Security Drill 2023" to improve the capacity to detect and handle incidents for the incident response team and specialized units on information security of the city.

The program takes place from December 26 to December 30, 2023 at Quang Trung Software Park (District 12). The drill aims to raise awareness and information security skills for IT staff of departments, agencies, and businesses in Ho Chi Minh City and Thu Duc City.

The rehearsal program took place over 4 days at Quang Trung Software Park (District 12).

The teams participating in the exercise will focus on three main contents: Preventing ransomware data encryption attacks via compromised websites; Preventing remote code execution from Fortinet devices via heap-based buffer overflow vulnerabilities; Preventing attacks via public wifi access points.

The program aims to promptly detect information security weaknesses in people, technology, and processes to take measures to improve and increase the ability to respond quickly when incidents occur; at the same time, increase sharing, learning experiences, and knowledge on ensuring network information security between units of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern provinces.

Mr. Vo Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the subjects of the practical cyber security exercise include the socio-economic information synthesis system and the information receiving and answering portal system for people, businesses and organizations in Ho Chi Minh City.

These are information systems deployed and applied on new technology solution platforms, providing many utilities and benefits to users in Ho Chi Minh City. For these information systems, hackers are always looking for ways to break in and steal information, requiring information security personnel to have specialized knowledge and in-depth skills to detect and deal with threats.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Cyber ​​Emergency Response Center, the drill was conducted on a real system to evaluate the teams’ ability to detect and respond to incidents. In addition, it also discovered weaknesses in information systems related to technology, human resources, etc. of systems in Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2023, most provinces, cities, and ministries will carry out combat operations and three large-scale national drills, discovering more than 400 vulnerabilities in the systems of agencies and organizations, thereby organizing remediation and taking practical measures to ensure system information security.
