Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed this in an interview with Tuoi Tre about the results of the 10th grade entrance exam in 2024. "The results of the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City this year are a positive signal, affirming the stability of the exam as announced by the Department of Education and Training," Mr. Quoc said.

10 years of exam innovation

* Sir, many opinions say that this year's math test is too long, too difficult, and the math score is also the lowest of the three subjects in the 10th grade entrance exam. What do you think about this issue?

Ông Nguyễn Bảo Quốc

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc

- The math exam for 10th grade entrance exams for many years has been two pages long. Some opinions say that the real-life math problems are too wordy, with a lot of unnecessary data...

In fact, this is the policy of the exam committee to practice and test the reading comprehension skills of candidates. Reading comprehension is an important skill for all subjects, not just literature. Similarly, with math, when reading the exam, candidates need to select the necessary data to use to solve the problem.

However, the council that created the 10th grade entrance exam still took note of the comments from experts and will consider the appropriate length of the math exam in the following years. From the 2025 10th grade entrance exam season, the exam must meet the requirements according to the assessment spirit of the 2018 General Education Program.

In addition, it is also necessary to clarify that this year's math exam has been issued in accordance with the professional orientation that the Department of Education and Training has guided since the beginning of the school year. In which, teaching is not only providing knowledge but also stimulating, promoting potential as well as developing qualities and abilities for students. The exam has increased questions requiring candidates to apply the knowledge they have learned to solve practical problems, not testing the knowledge they have memorized.

On the other hand, this is an entrance exam, not a graduation exam. And since it is an entrance exam, of course there must be differentiation. The math score distribution this year is parabolic, with the peak being 5 - that is, this is the score that the most students achieved, with 7,167 students achieving 5. The score distribution shows that the exam differentiates candidates very well.

* It is known that not this year but since 2014, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has started to innovate the content of the 10th grade entrance exam in math. So, in your opinion, why after 10 years, students are still not familiar with this innovation?

- It is true that in 2014, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City began to innovate the content of the 10th grade math entrance exam. However, we innovated gradually, increasing a little each year. Before innovating the exam content in the direction of increasing questions on applying knowledge to reality, the department provided professional guidance for secondary school teachers to innovate teaching methods, not to innovate all at once.

Like this year, if you look closely at the 10th grade entrance exam results, you will see that schools that innovate teaching and learning methods, innovate testing and student assessment methods as instructed by the department, students from that school will get high scores. The math exam results show that 49 candidates got 10 points, 31 candidates got 9.75 points, 132 candidates got 9.5 points in math...

Of which, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted had 11 candidates scoring 10 points. The next schools with many candidates scoring 10 points in math are Saigon Practicing High School, Le Thanh Tong Secondary School, Ly Phong, Le Van Tam, Tran Quoc Toan 1 (Thu Duc City)...

The results of the 10th grade entrance exam in 2024 require secondary schools to improve teaching and learning methods, testing and student assessment.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc

Persist with the direction of innovation

* What did the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training learn from this year's math exam , sir?

- We realize that the weakness of students in Ho Chi Minh City is reading comprehension. We also realize that many secondary schools have not yet implemented synchronous innovation in teaching methods and assessment in the direction of approaching students' abilities.

Regarding the 10th grade entrance exam, the Department of Education and Training will continue to adhere to the direction of innovating the exam content as mentioned above. Therefore, in the coming school year, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City will strengthen the organization of learning activities and teacher training. Secondary schools need to promote professional activities and increase support for colleagues.

On the teachers' side, they need to strengthen guidance for students to self-study; increase the use of digital learning materials and take advantage of the learning management system (LMS)... to help students perform tasks within their ability according to the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program, which is to develop students' qualities and abilities.

In addition, the Department will also make adjustments during the exam preparation process. The adjustments are to conform to the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program, not to change the scores or the orientation of testing and evaluation.

Mixed opinions on 10th grade math exam

The math test in the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City recently caused a stir in public opinion with many conflicting opinions. One side said that the test was too long and too difficult for students who had just finished 9th grade. The other side said that students could not do the test because secondary schools were teaching according to the old model. If teachers do not innovate teaching methods, students will have difficulty when encountering questions that require thinking, application, and improvisation...
