Historical and cultural relics: "Treasures" attracting tourists

Hanoi is the leading locality in the country in terms of the number of cultural heritages with nearly 6,000 cultural and historical relics; including 16 special national relics and relic clusters, nearly 1,200 relics ranked nationally; especially the Central Relic Area of Thang Long Imperial Citadel recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world cultural heritage.

According to the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, historical and cultural relics are distributed in districts, of which some localities have a large number of relics such as Thuong Tin district (440 relics), Ung Hoa district (433 relics), Ba Vi district (394 relics), Chuong My district (374 relics), Phu Xuyen district (345 relics), Soc Son district (341 relics)...

Due to the rapid urbanization and small area, the number of relics in inner city districts is somewhat more modest, specifically Thanh Xuan district (29 relics), Ba Dinh district (47 relics), Cau Giay district (49 relics), Hai Ba Trung district (51 relics), Hoan Kiem district (66 relics)...

According to the provisions of the Law on Cultural Heritage on the classification of relics, the Capital has all 4 types of historical and cultural relics including: Historical relics; Archaeological relics; Architectural and artistic relics; Scenic landscapes.

With special resources such as the system of relics, it is a unique and attractive resource to attract domestic and foreign tourists to the Capital.

According to the Hanoi Department of Tourism, in 2023, the city welcomed more than 24 million visitors (including more than 4 million international visitors and 20 million domestic visitors), an increase of 27% compared to 2022 and an increase of 9.1% compared to the plan. Total revenue from tourism reached more than VND 87.65 trillion, an increase of 45.5% compared to 2022 and an increase of 13.83% compared to the plan.

The above figures are not only a manifestation of people's growing interest in the cultural and historical heritage of the Capital, but also bring significant economic benefits.

The heritages and relics of the Capital all have historical, cultural and scientific values. From a development perspective, these are special resources and resources that can be exploited to contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the Capital. Such exploitation, no matter how little or how much, or even if it is still in the early stages, has affirmed the position and importance of the relic system in the current development context.

Architectural Heritage in the Creative City

In 2019, Hanoi was recognized by UNESCO as a member of the World Creative Cities Network. Since then, Hanoi has been gradually moving towards “Taking creativity and considering the creative economy as the core in the process of developing a dynamic, comprehensive and sustainable city”.

In that process, cultural heritage is both the spiritual and material foundation for building a Creative City, and is also a factor directly participating in creating creative spaces in the Capital.

The Bac Bo Palace, now the Government Guest House, was built in 1918 with a prominent ancient French architectural style. This 106-year-old building has just opened its doors to visitors for the first time. Thanks to the opening event, many people have the opportunity to see the special images inside the building for the first time, something that not everyone has had the opportunity to see before. Cultural heritages in general and architectural relics in particular are often places for cultural activities of the community, created, nurtured, and passed down by the community... Therefore, if they adapt well to contemporary society, they will play a role in attracting and promoting community activities, taking advantage of the creativity of all social classes.

Over the past time, the Vietnam Association of Architects has accompanied and participated with the Hanoi People's Committee and Architects to become a pioneer in the process of promoting the relationship between cultural heritage - architecture with creative activities, connecting interdisciplinary, contributing to the development of a creative city with a strong cultural identity. That is the important content realized in the Hanoi Creative Design Festival.

At the Seminar “Architectural Heritage in Creative City”, an event within the framework of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2024, experts and architects assessed the role of architectural heritage in creative cities.

They also raise troubling questions about the sustainability of the innovations being created within architectural heritage, suggesting systemic perspectives from architectural researchers as well as solutions to revitalize these heritages.

Prof. Dr. Architect Hoang Dao Kinh shared: “Perhaps living in Hanoi for too long, we will become ‘numb’ to what Hanoi has, but it must be said that Hanoi is a city that ‘inflates’ its uniqueness. The Hanoi Creative Design Festival has awakened us so that we are not indifferent to the city we live in. I really appreciate the courage of architects and artists with works that apply modern science and technology to revive heritages.”

According to Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects Hoang Thuc Hao, architectural heritage is not only a spiritual driving force but also promotes the economic development of the capital. The Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2024 with its heritage-focused content shows the interaction and resonance of contemporary authors with past heritage, from spaces to symbiotic works.

From the experience of reviving many architectural heritages in the area, Chairman of Hoan Kiem District People's Committee Pham Tuan Long said that it is necessary to have the coordination of many units in operating and exploiting the works after the festival. He hopes that the passing of the Capital Law will open up many directions in cooperation, effectively exploiting and using heritage spaces, as well as unique works after the Creative Design Festival ends.

In fact, after 4 years of organizing the Creative Design Festival, Hanoi has “awakened” some architectural works that seemed to have “slept” in the heart of the city. The Cantonese Assembly Hall, which preserves the memories of Hang Buom Street, has become an attractive cultural and artistic center with many exhibitions, displays, talks, and craft fairs organized.

When the Hang Dau Water Tower, the Government Guest House (Bac Bo Palace) or the University of Natural Sciences (General University) first opened their doors to visitors, hundreds of people lined up to at least once "touch" the heritage.

Many people are excited to register to experience the "Heritage Train" tour from Hanoi Station to Gia Lam Station to visit Gia Lam Railway Factory, the "Storytelling Footsteps" tour that helps pedestrians visit places on the "creative intersection" street including the Opera House, the National Museum of History, the Hanoi Children's Palace..., the "History and Echoes - Sacred Marks of Hanoi" tour to explore history, architecture and the art of Tuong...

Or places like Hanoi Children's Palace, Dien Hong Flower Garden (Toad Flower Garden), Tao Dan Flower Garden... with installation exhibitions, art performances, workshops, and fairs have attracted many people to participate, especially young people.

Notably, for the first time at the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2024, travel agencies piloted selling creative tours connecting heritage works once considered historical and cultural symbols of the Capital, attracting a large number of people to participate.

The “Creative Heritage Tour” with its optimal itinerary conveyed to visitors the cultural, historical, and architectural values of the heritages as well as the symbols and activities at the festival. The tour itinerary is an unexpected encounter between history and art from destinations such as the National History Museum, Bac Bo Palace, Opera House, University (former)…

In any country, each architectural work has its own language. Not only showing the talented creativity of human beings, architectural works more or less bear the mark of the times, express cultural and religious meanings, reflect the geographical and climatic characteristics of the land where the architectural work was built.

Hanoi has many architectural heritages that preserve the historical and cultural memories of the capital. Many of these works may not yet be recognized as heritages, but their historical, cultural, aesthetic, artistic, and exploitation values are posing a need for conservation and promotion, especially when Hanoi has officially become a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
