There are many reasons why lower back pain occurs on only one side. Some cases are warning signs of serious illness that requires immediate medical attention, according to Insider (USA).
Pain in one side of the lower back can be a warning sign of kidney stones or muscle strain.
Muscle tension
The most common cause of lower back pain on one side is injury to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the spine. This injury is often caused by falls, accidents, sudden twisting movements, and poor posture.
This condition is characterized by symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms in the lower back. The pain feels like being stabbed by a knife.
Infection
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) that are left untreated can lead to bladder infections and even kidney infections. They can cause constant, aching pain that radiates throughout the lower left back.
The best way to prevent urinary tract infections is to drink enough water. If you experience symptoms such as burning when urinating, cloudy, bloody, foul-smelling urine, fever, or chills, see your doctor as soon as possible.
Kidney stones
Kidney stones are a condition in which minerals in the urine form into stones inside the kidneys. They can cause severe, stabbing pain. People have two kidneys. The side with the stone will be painful. The pain may radiate to the lower abdomen, groin, and below the ribs. Another common symptom of kidney stones is blood in the urine.
The main factors that increase the risk of kidney stones are genetics, poor diet and certain underlying diseases. Small stones can pass through the urinary tract, while larger stones require surgery or shock wave lithotripsy.
Spinal fracture
Repetitive movements, such as weight lifting, rowing, tennis or gymnastics, can put pressure on the spine and cause spinal fractures.
If the fracture is in the lower back, it will cause severe pain on one side. Over-the-counter pain relievers will not be effective for this type of pain. Most spinal fractures can heal on their own in 6-8 weeks. However, the patient will recover better if they are examined and treated properly by a doctor, according to Insider .
