The implementation of projects and the introduction of Bich Dam Island into teaching not only arouses the love of the sea and islands in students.

That also helps them be more aware of protecting the livelihoods of their families and communities.

The potential and advantages of Bich Dam Island have been awakened to create a new look for this beautiful island. These days, on the journey to Bich Dam Island, the farthest island of Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province (Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City) to carry out popular teaching work, teachers of Bui Thi Xuan Secondary School (Nha Trang City) all shared the same joyful mood when the Project "Developing green and sustainable community tourism in Bich Dam" was deployed and integrated into teaching.

Awakening love for the sea and islands

Thanks to this project, teachers are aware of their great responsibility in teaching. From the accumulated knowledge, students will confidently apply it in practice to serve tourism on the island in the near future. When the island develops, meeting the demand for jobs is also a way to keep young people in their homeland.

In addition to teaching compulsory subjects in the curriculum such as math, literature, natural sciences, etc., teachers in charge also prepare their own teaching content for the subject of Local Education. This is a subject that integrates many sub-subjects. The content focuses on issues of culture, history, geography, society, environment, etc. of the locality. Through the subject content, students will be equipped with knowledge about protecting the sovereignty of seas and islands; fostering in students a love for their homeland, seas and islands; awareness of learning and applying what they have learned to contribute to solving local problems.

Taking advantage of Bich Dam Island's many famous landscapes and ancient relics with rich historical values, teachers proactively prepare lessons that are closely related to reality. For example, when introducing Bich Dam communal house, teachers guide students to learn about its history, architecture, cultural value and tourism development potential. The ancient communal house located near the bustling wharf on the island, which is already very familiar to students, is now included in the lesson, and students can verify it by direct observation every time they pass by this relic. Or from the canopy of the ancient banyan tree to the majestic Hon Lon lighthouse, which is known as the "eye of the sea" of Nha Trang Bay, also becomes vivid visual illustrations.

Bich Dam Island is not only beautiful in its name, but also beautiful in its unique and original landscapes and relics that have been preserved to this day. All are clearly depicted in each lecture, helping students deeply understand the value of protecting sovereignty and the love for the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

New look for the small island

The project "Developing green and sustainable community tourism in Bich Dam" is the desire of the islanders when meeting the long-term livelihood needs, as well as finding a direction for sustainable tourism exploitation when taking "coastal culture - fishing village lifestyle" as the main orientation for development here.

A peaceful corner on Bich Dam island

With the advantage of being formed for more than 300 years, Bich Dam fishing village is isolated from modern life, so human impacts, changes, and renovations to the landscape are almost non-existent. This place is also favored by nature with a terrain of steep cliffs on one side, and a blue sea on the other side with many wide and wind-sheltered beaches, suitable for anchoring boats during storms.

On the island, there is Hon Lon lighthouse, Bich Dam communal house, An Thanh temple, Bich Son pagoda, a 150-year-old heritage banyan tree, a diverse cuisine with fresh seafood caught close to shore. These are all unique advantages to attract more tourists to the island.

Along with creating a source of livelihood for the islanders is developing community tourism in a green, sustainable direction, associated with environmental protection. Most specifically, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Women's Union has chaired the implementation of the Project "Promoting dialogue and cooperation between the community and the private sector with state agencies in coral reef conservation and sustainable development of the Hon Mun sea area, Nha Trang Bay, Khanh Hoa Province".

With this project, the most important thing is to propagate and mobilize islanders to raise awareness of protecting sea and island sovereignty; protecting marine resources and coral reefs to transform to sustainable livelihood models through tourism activities. In the southern area of Bich Dam island, there is a good bottom structure, clear water, white sand so that corals can recover naturally, gradually restoring the original state of the coral reefs.

In addition, in the coming time, taking advantage of the sheltered sea area to pilot the model of growing seaweed will not only create a new source of livelihood, increase income for people but also aim to create a unique tourism product for visitors to experience.

The potential and advantages of Bich Dam Island are gradually being awakened to create a new look for this beautiful little island. And we expect that by implementing projects and plans, bringing Bich Dam Island into teaching will not only arouse the love of the sea and islands for students but also help them become more aware of protecting the livelihoods of their families and communities in the future.

Creating sustainable livelihoods for people

On January 3, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Women's Union coordinated with other units to organize a conference to summarize the project "Promoting dialogue and cooperation between the community and the private sector with state agencies in coral reef conservation and sustainable development of Hon Mun sea area, Nha Trang Bay, Khanh Hoa province".

Launched in August 2023, the project has so far achieved 3 goals in protecting the environment of Nha Trang Bay and conserving coral reefs in the Hon Mun strictly protected area, Nha Trang Bay, including establishing a sustainable livelihood foundation for the Bich Dam community living near the Hon Mun strictly protected area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, Vice Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee, highly appreciated the positive impacts of the project on the people of Bich Dam on Nha Trang Bay. According to Mr. Minh, this project, together with the city's implementation of the Project "Developing green and sustainable community tourism in Bich Dam", is expected to create sustainable livelihoods for the people. Bringing the right to enjoy the benefits to the people on the island is also the most practical measure to make people more aware and responsible in protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands.
