POSSIBLE TO MEET 2 UNESCO CRITERIA

Within the framework of the Quan The Am festival, yesterday (March 17) at the special national relic Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City organized a discussion on the topic: The influence of Buddhism in the documentary heritage of the Ma Nhai stele (documentary heritage belonging to the Memory of the World Program in the Asia-Pacific region) at the Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot in Da Nang.

Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Chi Hoang, member of the National Cultural Heritage Council, assessed that with many unique and special values, the Ma Nhai heritage should soon be upgraded to a higher level, as a world documentary heritage. "This is an issue that researchers should consider, so that when it is done, accessing the world heritage title for Ngu Hanh Son will be much more feasible," said Mr. Hoang.

Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Chi Hoang analyzed that Ngu Hanh Son was recognized as a national monument and then a special national monument of the scenic type. According to him, that shows that for a long time we have approached Ngu Hanh Son in terms of scenic beauty but rarely mentioned the cultural element. Meanwhile, the traces of Sa Huynh culture, Cham cultural imprints, Buddhist elements of different periods... are extremely dense and distinct. Mr. Hoang believes that the cultural elements of Ngu Hanh Son may meet UNESCO 's criteria for recognizing cultural heritage.

"The first thing is to determine the criteria, there needs to be a scientific advisory council to evaluate the natural, cultural, historical values... to choose the correct criteria. In my opinion, Ngu Hanh Son meets the second criterion on culture, being a relic site with the intersection of many historical periods leaving many unique values. Another criterion is very special geology. That is why people have approached it from the perspective of a scenic spot, which is likely to be suitable for the seventh criterion. Those are the two criteria that I think are capable of being studied so that we can build a profile," said Mr. Hoang.

According to the assessment of Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Chi Hoang, Ngu Hanh Son has a part of the Borobudur heritage (Indonesia), a part of My Son (Quang Nam) but not big enough; a part of the natural heritage of Phong Nha - Ke Bang (Quang Binh), a part of the natural heritage of Ha Long (Quang Ninh) but not as big. "Therefore, the effort to upgrade the heritage is very great, just like the great effort to make My Son and Hoi An become world heritage in the previous period. If Ngu Hanh Son becomes a world heritage, Quang Nam - Da Nang will be the land of explosive value promotion, at a very high level...", Mr. Hoang added.

CAUTION WHEN CONSERVING M A N HAI

Dr. Nguyen Hoang Than, University of Education - University of Da Nang, said that the system of inscriptions on the cliffs of Ngu Hanh Son, also known as ghost documents, was formed under the Nguyen Lords and Nguyen Dynasty along with a number of documents dating back to the first half of the 20th century, nearly 4 centuries old. There are currently nearly 80 steles, distributed throughout the Ngu Hanh Son area, of which ghost steles are mainly concentrated on the cliffs of Huyen Khong cave, accounting for nearly half of the total number of ghost steles in Ngu Hanh Son. Only considering the factor of the number of ghost documents at a relic in Vietnam, Ngu Hanh Son has the largest number of ghost documents.

Experts say it is necessary to set up an advisory council to compile a world heritage dossier for Ngu Hanh Son.

"The Ngu Hanh Son ghost stele in general and the Ngu Hanh Son ghost stele related to Buddhism in particular have been around for nearly half a millennium, so they have been affected by nature and humans. Many of them have been weathered and damaged. We need to have a special conservation policy to preserve the heritage for future generations," Mr. Than suggested. Researcher Ho Xuan Tinh said that many ghost stele inscriptions are being eroded and need to have their surfaces cleaned. If possible, those with missing letters should be restored by skilled artisans to make them clearer. "There is currently nano-coating technology. In Quang Nam, nano is coated to protect bricks in My Son and Chien Dan towers. When water falls, the bricks will not be soaked. We should do a test before doing it with ghost stele inscriptions," Mr. Tinh said.

Regarding the project to preserve and promote the value of 82 doctoral steles at the Temple of Literature, Dr. Nguyen Van Tu, Deputy Director of the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam , said that the functional sector has researched the type of stone that makes up the steles to find active ingredients to preserve and protect the steles, but no effective substances have been found. Currently, the unit only uses purified water to remove mold on the surface of the steles. Ngu Hanh Son should also follow this method if it has not carefully studied the stone material. "Ma nhay needs to be strictly protected from human impact, climate, and weather. Humid climate is also a harmful factor for ma nhay, so how to prevent the steles from being affected by water. Nano coating to preserve ma nhay is one of the solutions, but it needs to be carefully researched because no two types of stone materials are the same," said Mr. Tu.

Mr. Ha Vy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City, acknowledged that the work of preserving and promoting the value of ma nhai requires careful and thoughtful preparation. Accepting the need to update the dossier to elevate the ma nhai heritage to a world documentary heritage as well as aiming for the world heritage title for the entire Ngu Hanh Son landscape, Mr. Vy said: "This is very useful and valuable information and contributions, so the cultural sector and, more importantly, the City Party Committee and People's Committee of Da Nang City need to have a specific, clear and effective plan...".
