"We are aware that many people are having trouble accessing the service, and Meta is working to resolve the issue," Andy Stone, Meta's spokesperson, posted on social network X (Twitter) on the evening of March 5, not long after the incident of losing connection to most of Meta's services including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram... on a global scale.
The world's second largest social network - X - is also a frequent destination for users when Facebook has problems, and is also a "reputable" address for Meta leaders to update users whenever their platform has problems. X's official account on this platform also quickly posted a mocking post on Facebook: "We know why you're here right now."
Facebook's disconnection lasted for about 11 p.m. (Vietnam) and then showed signs of easing when some people started to get back into their accounts after going through the authentication steps. By 11:20 p.m. on March 5, many users in Vietnam said they were able to access and use the service normally, however, logging in on the mobile app was somewhat easier, while the web version on computers still had occasional errors.
Many users "check-in" as soon as they return to Facebook.
Previously, at around 10 p.m. on March 5, the sudden loss of connection to all popular Meta services including Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram occurred outside of business hours, causing many users in Vietnam to have their communication channels interrupted. In addition, another service of the company, WhatsApp, was also in a similar unstable state.
Ms. Khanh Huyen - a design specialist at a company in Hanoi said that while discussing work with a customer about a new product model via Messenger, she suddenly could not send messages and just a few minutes later the connection was completely lost. "My account was notified that my session was over and I was logged out," Ms. Huyen said.
She was even more confused when she could not log back into her account, and it kept reporting problems. Ms. Huyen said that she had previously clicked on some links to get more information on customer advice, so when she could not log back into Facebook, she thought that she had accidentally clicked on a fake website and had her account stolen because there had been many warnings about this issue recently.
Sharing the same sentiment, Ms. Hong Yen (Hanoi) worried that her account would be attacked when she suddenly lost connection. "The office is about to pay salary, I have to bring work home to finish on time. I don't know if there is a virus or something, if I accidentally lose or leak company information, I might lose my job," Ms. Yen said.
The prolonged disconnection of Facebook and Messenger has affected the work and communication of a large number of people, forcing them to seek other free messaging and calling services over the internet (OTT). This has caused traffic and access to some platforms such as Zalo, Telegram, Viber... to increase dramatically.
On some Telegram or Zalo chat groups, Facebook's disconnection has become a hot topic and the app loads content slower than usual, indicating a significant amount of traffic.
Khanh Linh (HCMC) said that after Facebook was "down", many people in her company had to call each other via Zalo or traditional mobile networks to check the situation and discuss work progress with each other. An "emergency" chat group was established so that the team leader could update everyone on the progress of the project as it neared the handover date.
This is the first time Meta services have experienced connectivity issues simultaneously in 2024.
