Taiwan is rushing to build a large number of Tuo Jiang-class frigates as Chinese warships and aircraft increasingly operate near the island, according to NHK. The Tuo Jiang-class frigates are 60.4 meters long, 14 meters wide, and have a displacement of 567 tons.
The first was put into service in September 2021. The fifth and sixth were delivered to Taiwan's maritime defense force on March 26, 20 months ahead of schedule, according to NHK.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen attended the handover ceremony at a port in Yilan County and welcomed the completion of the first phase of the Tuojiang-class frigate construction, stressing that the results so far have proven Taiwan's shipbuilding capabilities.
The Tuo Jiang-class frigate is a catamaran that can move stably at high speed, equipped with anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles. This type of frigate also uses stealth technology, making it difficult for enemy radar to detect.
Taiwan is pushing an "asymmetric warfare" strategy to counter China's military power with highly mobile equipment.
Taiwan plans to build five more Tuo Jiang-class frigates in the second phase.
