Applying steam microthermal method to treat patients

NDO - Steam microthermal therapy (Rezum) in the intervention for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia is a modern and minimally invasive surgical method that has just been successfully conquered by doctors at E Hospital.

The first patient to receive steam microthermal therapy (Rezum) was a male patient (68 years old, in Hanoi ) diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia 5 years ago.

Although surgery was indicated, due to many other underlying diseases, medical treatment was required. After a period of using the drug, the condition did not improve, the symptoms of urinary disorders became more and more serious, especially difficulty urinating, many times at night.

At Hospital E, patients are clinically examined by doctors and assigned to perform necessary tests and imaging.

Master, Doctor Pham Quang Khai, Department of Urology and Andrology, explains that benign prostatic hyperplasia is one of the common diseases in men, especially the elderly.

The disease is characterized by an increase in prostate size, causing compression of the urethra and leading to a series of symptoms of urinary disorders both day and night, affecting the quality of life... If not treated promptly, this condition can progress seriously, causing urinary tract infections, forming bladder diverticula, and even leading to kidney failure.

Realizing that the patient's prescription was being used to treat many underlying diseases such as cardiovascular disease, high blood fat, blood pressure, diabetes, etc., including anticoagulants, the doctors at E Hospital consulted, considered and selected the appropriate treatment method.

The doctors decided to apply microthermal steam therapy - a minimally invasive, safe and effective treatment method that helps reduce the risk of complications compared to traditional surgery and is especially suitable for this patient.

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien, Head of the Department of Urology and Andrology Surgery, and his team performed this surgery in less than 10 minutes.

Doctors use microwaves to create hot steam at 106 degrees Celsius, injecting it directly into the enlarged prostate tissue 4-6 times, depending on the size of the gland. Each injection lasts only 9 seconds, the steam spreads into the prostate cells, destroying the enlarged tissue.

Over time, the body will absorb and remove this tissue, helping to clear the urinary tract without having to remove the prostate like traditional surgical methods and, in particular, preserving the patient's sexual function.

The patient was re-examined after surgery.

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien shared about the superiority of steam microthermal therapy in prostate surgery, especially when applied to patients with many underlying diseases or who cannot undergo invasive surgery, namely: quick implementation time (less than 10 minutes), minimal invasiveness, minimizing the risk of complications compared to traditional surgical methods.

Because, microthermal steam therapy helps to selectively destroy prostatic hyperplasia without damaging surrounding structures. In particular, during surgery, it can be performed under local anesthesia (prostatic anesthesia) and intravenous sedation followed by post-treatment pain medication, limiting the risks associated with general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, especially in patients taking anticoagulants and having other comorbidities.

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien said that after surgery, the patient's health recovered quickly. Assessing the patient's urinary and sexual functions, the urinary disorder improved significantly, minimizing the risk of damage to the urethral sphincter, thereby significantly limiting complications such as urinary incontinence, uncontrolled urination and retrograde ejaculation...

This is one of the cases of prostate hypertrophy that doctors performed surgery on within the framework of the scientific conference "Application of steam microthermal therapy to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia" recently held at E Hospital.

This is the first case of intervention using this method in Vietnam. The success of this case opens up the opportunity for effective treatment for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
