Mr. Robert F Kennedy Jr, 70 years old, who is believed to be able to attract votes from both the Republican and Democratic parties, has decided to suspend his US presidential campaign and support former President Donald Trump.
Mr. Kennedy said he supported former President Donald Trump. “That decision pained me because of the hardship it caused my wife, my children, and my friends,” Mr. Kennedy said. “But I was certain that it was the right thing to do. That certainty has given me inner peace, even in storms.”
Hours after his public endorsement at a press conference, Mr. Kennedy attended a Trump campaign event in Arizona.
At the event, Mr. Trump expressed: "His (Kennedy's) election campaign inspired millions of Americans, raising important issues that have been ignored for too long in this country."
However, as the US presidential election approaches, polls show that the independent candidate's support has plummeted from double digits, as his budget and national reach have dried up.
As the son of the late US Senator Robert F Kennedy and the nephew of the late President John F Kennedy, Robert F Kennedy Jr comes from one of the most prominent families in Democratic politics. His decision to support a Republican presidential candidate has upset his relatives.
Strategists said it was unclear whether Kennedy's endorsement would help Trump, who is locked in a tight race with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
Speaking at a press conference earlier, Mr Kennedy, 70, said he had met Mr Trump and his aides several times and knew the two teams agreed on issues such as border security, free speech and ending wars. "There are still many issues and approaches where we have very big differences. But we are united on other important issues," he said.
* Regarding the US presidential election, on August 23, the police of this country announced that they had arrested a man in Arizona state for repeatedly threatening the life of former President Donald Trump.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said on August 22 that authorities arrested Ronald Lee Syvrud, 66, of Benson. For weeks, he had repeatedly threatened to kill Trump in social media posts.
Syvrud is also wanted on several other charges including sexual assault, drunk driving and hit-and-run in Wisconsin and Arizona.
News of the incident came as former President Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, stopped by Cochise County during his visit to the US-Mexico border as part of his campaign.
This is the latest in a series of incidents targeting candidates ahead of the US presidential election. Previously, on July 13, Mr. Trump was shot but luckily survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Earlier this month, authorities also accused a man in Virginia of threatening US Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate.
