Tet is approaching, at the construction sites of key traffic projects, the working atmosphere is still bustling.
Engineers and workers are all mentally prepared and encourage their families to stay and work on the airport, highway, and beltway during Tet.
"Dad won't be home this Tet"
Arriving at the Long Thanh airport passenger terminal at around 9am, a group of workers were taking a break and drinking water. We listened attentively to Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's phone call via Zalo application.
At key transport projects, contractors have planned construction through Tet early. (In photo: Worker Nguyen Xuan Huan drives a road roller to construct the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway). Photo: Nguyen Nham.
On the other end of the line was the cute, clear voice of a little girl about 7 years old. "Dad, I like the pink Elsa princess dress, I like mango candy... When Tet comes, Dad, please buy it for me. Remember to come back for Tet with me, Dad...".
The short, whining words from his little daughter in his hometown of Ha Tinh asking for a gift made Mr. Tam pause for a few seconds. He nodded, smiled at his daughter, but his face showed a hint of sadness. Then he hung up. He wouldn't be home for Tet.
Mr. Tam said that he was one of the first people to work at Long Thanh airport construction site, experiencing many different jobs. This year, he and his colleagues in the construction team worked on the roof of the terminal. This is the second consecutive year that he decided to stay at the construction site because of the overall progress of the project.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam cleans the steel panels of the passenger terminal to prepare for installation.
"I live in Ha Tinh, my two children are still in school, my wife works in the fields. Every day when I have free time or break time, I call my wife and children. My children also whine and ask me to come home for Tet, sometimes it makes me feel heartbroken. But the project is under pressure, if everyone is off, who will work? I try to stay at the construction site with my colleagues, and we'll think about it after Tet," he confided.
When asked about his plans for Tet, he smiled: "I send all the money I have home for my family to celebrate Tet. It's fun being at the construction site during Tet, the salary is three times higher than usual. The company also gives gifts and organizes Tet at the construction site, so it's cozy and full of family. Whenever I miss home, I call home, now with technology, it's convenient."
Put aside personal feelings for the common good
Leaving Long Thanh airport, the reporter was present at the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway component 1 project, the section through Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai. In the hot afternoon sun at the end of the year, Nguyen Xuan Huan, a road roller driver (from Khanh Hoa) was still working hard to roll the roadbed.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan works on iron at component project 1, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway.
He said his wife and children all live in the countryside with his mother and grandparents. Every year, when Tet comes, the family gathers together happily. Last year, he was able to go home early, but this year, he will probably stay.
"The company doesn't have any plans yet, but it's likely to work through Tet. If my colleagues stay, I will also sign up to work and contribute to the project's quick completion. After work every night, I video call home to listen to the kids talk about school and their parents' instructions. Seeing both parents and the children healthy makes me feel secure to go to work," said Mr. Huan.
Similar to Long Thanh airport and Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway, the Nhon Trach bridge section of Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 extending through Dong Nai is also under construction.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (45 years old, from Nghe An) is diligently and meticulously making iron. He said that if he continues to work on Tet this year, it will be the second Tet he will not return to his hometown. Mr. Tuan said that his eldest daughter is in high school, and his youngest is only in 6th grade.
"This year I stayed to work through Tet and couldn't come home. My children and I had to ask my grandparents to take care of us. After work these past few days, I called home and heard my children asking when I would be home for Tet. I felt sad. But I had to give up, work was urgent. My wife encouraged me to work hard so that next year I would have more time to come home to my children and me," said Mr. Tuan.
Pressure on progress and quality of construction
According to Mr. Duong Quang Dien, Permanent Deputy Director of Long Thanh Project Management Board, the progress is very tense as the completion time has been reduced to 2025. Although the terminal, runway, connecting traffic routes... have taken shape, changing the progress causes a lot of pressure.
Nhon Trach bridge construction site belongs to Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 project.
The joint venture contractor mobilized 10,000 personnel and machinery for construction. It is expected that during the 2025 Lunar New Year, about 70% of the personnel will still be mobilized to work through Tet. "The Project Management Board will coordinate with the contractor to care for, encourage, and ensure the rights of workers and engineers working through Tet. At the same time, pay attention to labor safety and construction quality," said Mr. Dien.
According to Mr. Nguyen Linh, Deputy Director of Dong Nai Traffic Construction Project Management Board, it is expected that this Tet, some units will construct the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway component 1 project through Tet.
"The progress has gradually improved, the difficulties have been gradually resolved, mainly the land acquisition problem at the beginning of the expressway. We hope to soon have enough land to speed up the construction of all items simultaneously," Mr. Linh shared.
According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, up to now, the component project 1A of Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 has reached over 83% of the progress, expected to open to traffic in April 2025, and be fully completed in June 2025, 4 months ahead of schedule compared to the contract.
"Because the progress needs to be accelerated to reach the finish line on April 30, this Tet holiday, we will continue to work through Tet. The Project Management Board and the contractor will encourage the engineers and workers so that they can stay at the construction site with peace of mind. There will also be reunion meals, cakes, flowers and ornamental plants...", said the Project Management Board representative.
Ready to work through Tet
At the North-South Expressway component projects, construction during Tet has also been planned early by many contractors.
With the Chi Thanh - Van Phong project through Phu Yen province, contractors are taking advantage of every day to make up for the progress at the construction site that has been "stalled" due to continuous rain for over a month.
In this project, the North-Central-South Infrastructure Construction Joint Stock Company is constructing more than 8.6km of the XL-02 package. According to Mr. Le Minh Phuong, the company representative, the progress of the roadbed embankment has only reached 45% because the embankment exploitation does not meet the required capacity. In the immediate future, the company will deploy 3 shifts, 4 shifts, and work during Tet to make up for the progress.
Similarly, at the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon project through Binh Dinh province, contractors are also focusing on machinery and human resources to increase output from the beginning of 2025.
Despite being ahead of schedule, the contractor Son Hai Group still mobilized hundreds of workers at the construction site. The unit has now paved the second layer of asphalt on the road surface.
Paver operator Nguyen Van Thanh (from Quang Binh province) after working on many projects in Nha Trang and Vung Tau, was assigned to the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon expressway. He said that like many other holidays, his work is still the same, still attached to the construction site.
"I'm from Quang Binh, on a normal day I only get to go home once every 2 or 3 months. I come home to visit my family for a while and then leave again. During holidays and Tet, people get to go home, gather with their parents, rest, and their families also expect us to come back. But at the highway construction site, the progress is as tight as a bowstring. As long as the company requires us to work through Tet, we are always ready," Thanh shared.
Son Hai Group is constructing 22km of the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon expressway. In addition to the quality of the project, this unit also takes good care of the workers' lives.
At the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon project, according to Project Management Board 85, package 12XL is currently ahead of schedule, while package 11XL is behind schedule due to the long time it took to convert forest use purposes through Hoai An and Phu My districts.
After the conversion, the weather in the area was continuously rainy, causing the construction to be delayed. Therefore, the contractor, Truong Son Construction Corporation, has registered to work through Tet to make up for the progress. This unit is submitting a construction plan through Tet for the investor to consider.
Many highway projects are ahead of schedule.
A representative of the Department of Construction Investment Management (Ministry of Transport) said that by the end of December 2024, the construction output of 10 component projects of the North-South Expressway in the East in the 2021-2025 period had reached about 64% of the contract value. Many component projects have large implementation value, are ahead of schedule and have registered to shorten the completion time by 3-6 months such as: Bai Vot - Ham Nghi, Ham Nghi - Vung Ang, Bung - Van Ninh, Van Ninh - Cam Lo, Van Phong - Nha Trang, etc.
The two component projects of the Can Tho - Ca Mau section achieved construction output of more than 52% of the contract value.
Implementing the direction of the Prime Minister at the 15th meeting of the State Steering Committee for important national and key projects of the transport sector, the Ministry of Transport has issued a document requesting project management boards to proactively coordinate and direct construction contractors to coordinate with localities to remove difficulties and obstacles in site clearance, relocation of technical infrastructure, and supply of construction materials; to focus, be highly determined, make great efforts, and resolutely carry out construction with the spirit of "overcoming the sun, overcoming the rain", "only working, not backing down", "3 shifts, 4 shifts", "eating quickly, sleeping urgently", "through holidays, through Tet, through days off", "finishing what you do", "committed to, must be done, promised to be done" to speed up the progress of project implementation.
It is important to note that we must not be subjective or negligent in directing and operating, which will affect quality and progress, especially projects scheduled to be completed in 2025 in the 3,000km expressway category.
Project management boards are also required to urge consultants and contractors to review and evaluate items that determine project progress, reorganize construction on site, and carry out construction smoothly, scientifically, and simultaneously at many locations according to the "rolling" principle.
At the same time, urge consultants and contractors to have a scientific and reasonable plan to arrange human resources to construct during the At Ty Tet holiday; regularly pay attention to the lives of workers and laborers at the construction site.
