The semiconductor industry is considered the 'lifeblood' of the modern economy.

Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat compared semiconductor chips in particular and the semiconductor industry in general to "grains of rice", because they feed all different fields in the technology era and are the key to digital technologies in the future.

As the "bloodline" of the digital economy, the semiconductor industry plays a key, important role and is the focus, attracting many industries in the world, forecast to bring in revenue of more than 620 billion USD in 2024 and increase sharply to 1,000 billion USD in 2030. This industry is also considered the core part of the technological competition between the superpowers in the 21st century.

This trend is progressing with three major developments in the semiconductor technology field, including:

The semiconductor industry is expected to grow from USD 0.72 trillion in 2024 to USD 1.21 trillion by 2029, at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 10.86% during the forecast period (2024 - 2029). The semiconductor sector is expanding rapidly as semiconductors are becoming the fundamental components of modern technology.

This unprecedented pace of semiconductor adoption not only highlights the transformative potential of AI, but also sets the stage for a major shift in global connectivity and economic systems. Consider the speed at which technology has permeated our lives. It took 75 years for landlines to reach 100 million users globally. In contrast, mobile phones reached this milestone in just 16 years and the internet in just 7 years. It took the Apple Store 2 years and, incredibly, ChatGPT reached this milestone in just 2 months.

The geopolitics of chip technology will shape the future of AI. Yet the world’s most important cutting-edge technology is almost all produced at a single facility in Taiwan. Moreover, that facility is located in one of the most tense geopolitical regions on earth – a region where many analysts even believe war is inevitable this decade. This is a major risk that is driving leading chip manufacturers such as Nvidia, Samsung… to seek new geopolitical locations with potential in natural resources, infrastructure, human resources, market connections, and stable political security like Vietnam to minimize long-term risks…

In Vietnam, the semiconductor industry is considered to have great potential and opportunities for development due to its stable political system. In addition, Vietnam is located in the center of Southeast Asia, has a strategic position in the global supply chain and is an ideal location for manufacturers wishing to enter the fast-growing semiconductor market in the region. At the same time, Vietnam has an abundant workforce in the field of technology engineering suitable for the semiconductor industry.

In particular, Vietnam currently ranks second in the world in rare earth reserves (about 22 million tons), a special mineral, a strategic material for semiconductor production. With these advantages, Vietnam can become a major growth center of the semiconductor industry, in the context of the global chip market reaching more than 600 billion USD in 2022 and forecast to increase to 1,400 billion USD in 2029.

However, the localization rate of this industry is still low, and research and development activities are not synchronized. In addition, high-quality human resources in the semiconductor field are limited in both quantity and quality. Moreover, Vietnam also needs to make great efforts to reach cooperation agreements to support technology transfer with technology powers, thereby moving towards complete autonomy in important stages in the semiconductor chip manufacturing process.
