On the weekend of December 29, some state-owned commercial banks such as VietinBank, Vietcombank, BIDV, and Agribank remained open to support customers in updating biometric data, avoiding interruptions in online transactions after January 1, 2025.

Speaking to a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Director of the Payment Department, State Bank, said that up to now, about 80% of card accounts and payment accounts of customers in the banking system have been biometrically authenticated.

At VietinBank, Mr. Tran Cong Quynh Lan, Deputy General Director, said that currently about 86% of VietinBank's customers have completed biometric authentication. VietinBank previously required customers to authenticate biometrics when making online financial transactions, which is an earlier application than the regulation.

A representative of Vietcombank said that more than 9.7 million customers of this bank have completed updating biometric data.

According to the State Bank, by October 25, the entire banking industry had 48 million customer records that had been biometrically verified via chip-embedded ID cards or VneID. By the end of September 2024, the number of bank cards in circulation reached more than 157.1 million cards, an increase of 11.68% over the same period last year.

For customers whose identification documents have expired, their transactions will be stopped on all transaction channels.

Banks encourage customers to update their biometrics early to avoid transaction interruptions and only update customer information and biometrics on banking applications; support at transaction points. Agribank recommends that customers need to be more vigilant against forms of fraud and scams to avoid losing money unjustly.
