According to VNA correspondent in London, on April 1, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced an important step forward in bilateral trade relations between Vietnam and the UK when Vietnam officially opened its market to fresh seafood from the UK. This agreement is expected to bring in more than 26 million USD in revenue over the next 5 years for the UK seafood industry.
Vietnam, with the highest per capita seafood consumption in Southeast Asia (37kg/person/year), is considered a potential market for high-end British seafood products.
Coastal communities in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will benefit directly from this new export opportunity.
UK seafood exports to Vietnam have recorded an impressive 40% growth in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the previous year. Vietnamese consumers will have access to high-quality fresh British seafood products, especially lobster and brown crab.
Defra Deputy Minister Daniel Zeichner stressed that this agreement not only opens up new opportunities for British businesses but also demonstrates the government's commitment to promoting exports.
Meanwhile, Mr. David Jarrad, CEO of the Shellfish Association (SAGB), said that Vietnamese importers are willing to pay competitive prices for British seafood./.
