Graduated from university with a degree in electronics and telecommunications, Ms. Doan Thi Diem Kieu, residing in Thot Not District (Can Tho City) decided to put her degree aside and turn to tourism from her 1-hectare coconut garden.

Take advantage of home

Ms. Kieu's Tan Loc Coconut Garden tourist destination is located on Tan Loc Islet, Thot Not District ( Can Tho City ), 1 hectare wide, with more than 500 trees, with coconut varieties: Vietnamese, Siamese, pineapple... In the garden, there are many canals between the coconut rows for visitors to experience rowing a boat, enjoying the fresh air of the islet on the banks of the Hau River.

Ms. Kieu said that her family planted the coconut garden more than 10 years ago. In 2013, she graduated from the electronics and telecommunications major at Can Tho University of Technology. While waiting to find a job, realizing the great potential of the coconut garden, she decided to put her university degree aside to start a tourism business in this garden. "When I returned to my hometown to wait for a job, I helped my parents sell coconuts. After that, I opened a shop selling coconuts to passersby and then decided to start a business in my hometown," Ms. Kieu said.

Tan Loc Islet is also known as Tam Tinh Islet, and is visited by many tourists, mainly from Can Tho, Dong Thap, An Giang, etc. Therefore, when seeing many tourists wanting to stop and rest, Ms. Kieu arranged more tables, chairs, and hammocks in the shop. Gradually, many people expressed their interest in seeing the spacious, airy garden and expressed their desire to visit and take photos. Ms. Kieu decided to plan the garden into a tourist attraction for visitors to experience rowing a boat and picking coconuts in the garden to enjoy.

To realize this idea, Ms. Kieu expanded her small selling point into a large-scale tourist destination. She cleaned the garden, regularly cleaned the coconut trees, and removed the dry fruits to ensure the safety of visitors. At the same time, she hired workers to dredge the ditches and bought more boats so that visitors could swim and visit the coconut garden.

Interesting destination

On weekdays, the coconut garden has dozens of visitors , and on weekends, the number is more than 100. Coming here, visitors only spend 5,000 VND for a boat ride, and coconut water costs from 10,000 to 25,000 VND/fruit (depending on the type). In addition, Ms. Kieu also sells coconut seedlings to customers who want to buy them for planting. Thanks to that, she earns nearly 30 million VND per month.

"Growing coconuts requires less care, and the trees bear fruit all year round. If you sell coconuts normally, you won't get a good price, but if you sell them to tourists, the price will be higher. When visitors visit the garden, I can rent out boats to earn extra income. Thanks to that, I have a higher and more stable income," said Ms. Kieu.

Ms. Kieu also connects households that do tourism together to develop a tour of Tan Loc Islet. In the near future, she will sell more food to serve tourists who come to experience and rest during the day.
