According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from June 5 to the night of June 6, the Northern region and Thanh Hoa will continue to have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with rainfall ranging from 40-100mm, some places over 200mm. From the evening of June 5 to the night of June 6, the Nghe An region will have moderate rain, heavy rain, thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with rainfall ranging from 40-70mm, some places over 100mm. The risk of natural disasters due to heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, and hail is level 1.

People in the above areas need to be on guard against the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas and flooding in low-lying areas. Heavy rain in a short period of time can cause flooding in urban areas; thunderstorms can cause tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.

According to lightning monitoring data from the national lightning location network, on the morning of June 5, heavy rain in the Hanoi area was accompanied by more than 7,000 lightning strikes to the ground. Specifically, from 6 to 9 a.m., there were more than 10,000 lightning strikes, of which 7,025 struck the ground, with the lightning intensity from 7:40 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. being the strongest.

In Hanoi, thunder and lightning appeared in many districts; in which, the areas of Thuong Tin, Phu Xuyen, Thanh Oai, Ung Hoa districts had dense thunder and lightning.

Experts advise that thunderstorms are electrical discharges between storm clouds that accumulate electricity to the ground. To avoid thunderstorms and lightning, people should stay away from electrical appliances, wet places such as bathrooms, water tanks, faucets, and should not use the phone unless absolutely necessary; unplug electrical appliances before a thunderstorm.

When outdoors, if people cannot find shelter, they must stay away from tall trees, do not stand on hilltops or in open areas, do not stand or sit next to electric poles or power lines, and dispose of metal objects on their person.

In case people are in an open area, they should put their feet together, bend down close to the ground (but not touch or lie down on the ground) with their hands covering their ears… If in the forest, people should find places with lower and sparse trees to avoid; do not stand in groups of people close together…

Thunderstorms often appear in the early stages of the rainy season, after a period of hot, dry weather. The thunderstorm season in Vietnam is relatively long, with an average of 100 thunderstorm days per year and an average of 250 thunderstorm hours per year. Each year, Vietnam experiences up to 2 million lightning strikes. Lightning frequency is higher in mountainous areas, the Northern midlands and the Southern Delta...
