Digital transformation in agriculture: Always with farmers

Considered the “golden key” to sustainable development, digital transformation has had a strong and positive impact on agricultural production in recent times. According to Mr. Kieu Quang Khanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in the past 5 years, many solutions applying digital technology and production processes, providing agricultural services and developing e-commerce in agricultural production have promoted the transformation from agricultural production to agricultural economy. This is the right direction, in line with the trend of the times.

PV: How do you evaluate the "speed" of digital transformation in the agricultural sector in Thai Nguyen?

Mr. Kieu Quang Khanh: Digital transformation in the agricultural sector in the province has had strong changes in the past 4 years. Accordingly, data digitization in the agricultural sector has been implemented quite effectively. The digitization of production processes and the transfer of scientific and technological advances have been implemented in many forms. The field of cultivation and plant protection digitizes the cultivation processes for fruit trees, tea, rice, and vegetables according to VietGAP, organic standards and according to the OCCOP product implementation cycle; implements the management of growing area codes. In livestock farming, scientific and technological advances are applied in high-yield varieties, cold barns, automated operations of feed, drinking water, disinfection, environmental treatment and building value chains in livestock farming... In the forestry sector, digitizing the process of planting forestry trees, medicinal herbs and the process of guiding the conditions, components, and dossiers for granting FSC forest certification. In the field of irrigation, digitizing disaster warning information, videos warning of flooding points at spillways, culverts, and residential roads.

In reforming administrative procedures in the electronic environment, the Department has increased the application of information technology, strictly implemented publicity and transparency in receiving and handling administrative procedures... In addition, the Department has built large data systems, up to now, many application software have been put into use such as: Thai Nguyen agricultural product quality management; Growing area code information system; Online disease information system (VAHIS)...

PV: In your opinion, how has digital transformation helped change Thai Nguyen's agriculture?

Mr. Kieu Quang Khanh: The application of digital technology in agriculture not only contributes to reducing labor and input costs but also improves productivity, quality and value of agricultural products, helping many agricultural products of Thai Nguyen affirm their brands at home and abroad. For example, from managing growing area codes, organizations and individuals who have been granted them have paid more attention to standardizing the process of caring for and managing crops; managing planting areas, warning about disease situations, planning care and reporting the list of pesticides allowed for use... From there, it has created safe, quality products that are more accepted and consumed by the market, with higher selling prices and increasing value.

Or promoting digital transformation in product consumption has also brought positive results. Currently, the whole province has more than 160 thousand agricultural production households with accounts created and posted on e-commerce platforms with over 2,000 agricultural products. Thereby, sales of units have increased from 20 to 50%, online sales revenue and e-commerce platforms account for 30%.

PV: To achieve higher results in digital transformation in agriculture is the goal that Thai Nguyen province is aiming for. In your opinion, what do we need to do to achieve the set goal with the best results?

Mr. Kieu Quang Khanh: In the 4.0 era, digital transformation plays an important role, especially in agricultural production. To achieve even better results, in addition to continuing to promote propaganda and raise awareness of the entire political system, efforts from farmers, businesses, cooperatives, etc. are still needed. In particular, these organizations and individuals need to proactively innovate in production and business, build strategic products, improve livestream sales skills to expand the consumer market, increase product value, etc.

On the side of the provincial authorities, the provincial authorities always accompany the farmers. The provincial leaders always agree with the readiness to mobilize social resources to promote cooperatives, enterprises, and people to apply science and technology into production. In particular, the province prioritizes the development of digital economy and e-commerce, contributing to increasing the economic value of OCOP products...
