With over 30 years of experience in the teaching profession, teacher Luu Thi Lap, Principal of Hoang Cau High School (Dong Da District, Hanoi), is always dedicated to building happy schools. According to her, a happy school is a place that creates a positive, comprehensive learning environment, focusing on the emotions and personal development of each student.
"Happiness is not just accepting but knowing how to change yourself"
Sharing with reporters about the successful construction of the "Happy Classroom - Happy School" model at Hoang Cau High School, Teacher Luu Thi Lap said that it was a journey of change in perception that lasted for 5 years (from 2018 to 2023 ).
"We listened to feedback through many forms to discover things and actions that made our students, teachers, and parents unhappy. From there, we found solutions to make them happier" - teacher Luu Thi Lap said.

The principal of Hoang Cau High School said: "We have implemented a series of school-level seminars such as: "Homeroom teachers with skills to build happy classrooms", "Love - The foundation for building happy classrooms, happy schools", "Positive discipline to build happy schools"... and hundreds of class-level seminars such as: "We and teachers build happy classrooms" (Grade 10), "We spread happiness through communication work" (Grade 11), "We build school culture in happy classrooms" (Grade 12)... to help teachers and students understand about happy schools, thereby changing their thinking and perspectives on happiness in schools.
With the model of a financially autonomous public school, over the years, Hoang Cau High School has always saved money to invest in renovating and upgrading facilities and equipment to become more and more spacious and modern, meeting the requirements of the new general education program.
According to Principal Luu Thi Lap, a happy school is a place that creates a positive, comprehensive learning environment, focusing on the emotions and personal development of each student.
Extracurricular activities of Hoang Cau High School students always aim at comprehensive development.
To do that, teachers need to have many initiatives to inspire in each lesson, have methods to create a happy and comfortable classroom atmosphere. As for students, they need to understand that happiness is not only about acceptance, but they themselves must also know how to change themselves to be responsible to accompany their teachers, thereby forming qualities and abilities for the young generation, elegant, civilized and modern citizens of Hanoi.
The happiest thing in my career of "growing people" is to train generations of happy students who know how to love and share, behave civilly and are responsible to the community. I always hope that every school in Hanoi will become a happy school to train generations of happy citizens, contributing to building a rich, civilized, peaceful and progressive Hanoi.

Respect each student's differences
The Principal of Hoang Cau High School said that in order to build a happy school, there need to be 4 core values for teachers, students, parents and the school's Board of Directors, which are: Love - Safety - Respect - Pride.
"We have created a physically and mentally safe environment; respecting the cultural diversity and unique characteristics of each student. The relationship between students, teachers and school staff is always warm like a family. And especially, we always acknowledge and are proud of the journey of growth, maturity, and changes in awareness of each student" - teacher Luu Thi Lap said.
Parent-teacher conferences to engage with schools and students
With that core value in mind, Hoang Cau High School regularly organizes extracurricular activities with topics following the flow of events such as: the program "Echoes of Dien Bien" with the exchange between veterans of O Cho Dua ward; organizing a book festival with a contest to stage folk literature works and design book models; the information technology and STEM festival of the capital's education sector; experiential and career guidance activities with the theme "Pursuing passion"; Workshop connecting families and schools in career orientation for students...
Teacher Luu Thi Lap said that organizing a variety of extracurricular activities and experiences helps students develop comprehensively physically and mentally. The main goal of a happy school is to help students feel happy in their studies, thereby developing life skills, creative thinking and social capacity.
On the journey to find and sow the seeds of happiness, teachers and students of Hoang Cau High School have achieved many achievements. At the conference to summarize the 2023-2024 school year and deploy tasks for the 2024-2025 school year of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, Hoang Cau High School was honored to be 1/6 schools in the city to receive the flag of the excellent unit leading the emulation movement in the 2023-2024 school year from the Hanoi People's Committee. For 8 consecutive years, teachers of Hoang Cau High School have won the award "Dedicated and Creative Hanoi Teachers". In the past 10 years (from 2014 to 2024), the high school graduation rate and university and college graduation rate reached 100%. Every year, the school has students winning prizes at the cluster and city levels , and students participating in round 2 of the national team competition.

Teacher Luu Thi Lap shared that in the 5-year journey plan of the 2023-2028 period, in addition to firmly preserving and consolidating the values of phase 1, the school will take advantage of 4.0 technology to delve into identifying the daily emotions of each subject in the school through the Hoang Cau - Happy school App, from which the Board of Directors, homeroom teachers and school psychology counselors have a plan to provide timely psychological support to students.
Teacher Luu Thi Lap received a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (2022-2023 school year); a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor and a Certificate of Merit from the Hanoi City Labor Confederation (2021-2022 school year); a Certificate of Merit from the Hanoi People's Committee (2023-2024 school year). In October 2024, teacher Luu Thi Lap received the title "Outstanding Capital Woman" awarded by the Hanoi Women's Union.
