Thai stock market halts trading after Myanmar earthquake

The Thai stock exchange announced a halt to all trading on the afternoon of March 28, following a strong earthquake in neighboring Myanmar.

According to Reuters , the Thai stock exchange announced on March 28 that it would suspend all trading activities in the afternoon session after a strong earthquake occurred in neighboring Myanmar.

The announcement said the trading suspension applies to all markets, including SET (stock exchange), MAI (stock exchange for small and medium enterprises) and TFEX (futures exchange).

Before trading was suspended, the SET index fell 1.05% to 1,175 points, its lowest in more than a week. Thai stocks were under pressure today due to the US car import tariffs announced on March 26.

At 12:50 p.m. on March 28 in Myanmar (1:20 p.m. Hanoi time), a 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred 16 km northwest of Sagaing city in central Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake spread to Bangkok, Thailand. A high-rise building under construction in Bangkok collapsed after the earthquake. Thai media reported that at least 43 people were trapped in the collapsed high-rise building in Bangkok.
