On April 12, the Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee announced that it was assigned by the Central Government to preside over the arrangement of provincial-level administrative units with Kon Tum. The Standing Committees of the Provincial Party Committees of the two provinces will hold a meeting on the morning of April 15 at the headquarters of the Kon Plong District Party Committee, Mang Den Town (Kon Plong District, Kon Tum) to implement this work.
The Steering Committee on summarizing Resolution 18 and implementing Conclusion No. 137 of the Politburo on the Project on rearranging and reorganizing administrative units at all levels and building a model of organizing two-level local governments has prepared content and documents for the meeting, after reviewing the area, population, staff, policies, and facilities.
It is expected that Quang Ngai will arrange public assets as working facilities and official housing for officials from Kon Tum to work when the new province is established.
Quang Ngai covers an area of over 5,000 km2, with 13 districts and 170 communes, and a population of 1.5 million people. The locality is among the top in terms of budget revenue in the Central region with the core being the Dung Quat Oil Refinery, industrial parks attracting foreign investment; at the same time, it has advantages in sea and island tourism, especially Ly Son island district. Quang Ngai also has many seaports with 31 wharves and is expected to increase to 41.
Kon Tum has an area of nearly 10,000 km2, including 9 districts, 102 communes, and a population of about 700,000 people. The province has advantages in forests and agriculture and forestry. Mang Den tourist area is considered a version of Da Lat with a cool climate and pine forests, cherry blossom forests associated with unique culture. Kon Tum has Bo Y border gate bordering Laos.
The two provinces are currently connected by National Highway 24 through Vi O Lac Pass. Recently, Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh assigned Project Management Board 85 to prepare for investment in the 136 km Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway project, with a total investment of more than VND 35,000 billion, in the period 2025 - 2028.
When completed, the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway will shorten travel time between the two provinces, while creating a quick and synchronous connection between the two North - South expressways in the east and west.
At the 11th Central Conference of the 13th tenure, which closed on April 12, the Central Executive Committee agreed to reduce the number of provincial-level administrative units nationwide from 63 to 34, including 28 provinces and 6 centrally-run cities.
