EVN Chairman shares unforgettable memories on 30th anniversary

EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An shared his thoughts about the 30-year process of establishing the National Power System Control Center (A0), now NSMO.

A year of overcoming difficulties

Speaking at the Ceremony, Chairman of the Board of Members of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) Dang Hoang An highly appreciated the performance of the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) in 2024, especially in the context of changes in management organization, as well as more difficult conditions for managing and operating the power system than before.

However, with its efforts and continuing to promote tradition, NSMO has made an important and key contribution in helping the electricity industry and EVN complete its political task of ensuring sufficient electricity according to the direction of the Central Government, the Government, the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Industry and Trade , and the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises.

EVN Chairman cited that the expected electricity growth for the whole year is 10.13% , however , in the first 8 months of 2024, electricity growth has reached 11.67% . In the hot weather conditions lasting until early September , right when A0 "moved house", but in such difficult conditions, NSMO still achieved very good results.

“ At the summary conference of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, we reported first on the electricity supply situation, second on construction investment. It is estimated that for the whole year, EVN completed disbursement of 112,892 billion VND, an increase of 10.8% compared to the plan. After 10 years, we have just exceeded the investment plan, which is also approximately 5 billion USD, still the highest number among the company's corporations " - Mr. Dang Hoang An said and informed that, including the private sector, we believe that the disbursement last year is certainly not equal to EVN, including bright spots that you all know, such as completing the generation of two expanded Italy generators and the 500kV line 3. We have started the project to supply electricity to Con Dao and related items. Currently, we are also preparing to start the Bac Ai project, the Tri An hydropower expansion project...

Third is production and business, which need to balance finances. Fourth is the economic and technical indicators of the electricity industry in general, this is also a very important contribution of the previous A0, the current NSMO. Currently, the reliability of electricity is still maintained at level 4 of ASEAN, which means that the average power outage index of customers has now decreased significantly, to 219 minutes.

I remember in 2008, when I was the Deputy General Director of Engineering of the group, the number was infinite and could not be counted, then it was put into statistics as about 20,000 minutes. Now it is 219.2 minutes. Many provincial or district power companies have achieved less than 5 minutes - equivalent to Singapore. Currently, the total power loss of the system from the factory busbar to the final consumer is 6.05%, 3 years ahead of the plan set by EVN.

Mr. Dang Hoang An shared that Vietnam has certain technological products, for example, the production of 900 MVA transformers, which is also the largest in the country and is also the only country in Southeast Asia that can manufacture 500 kV transformers made by Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation under the close direction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Under the direction of the Central Party Committee, the Government, the Prime Minister, EVN and the entire electricity industry have also performed very well the tasks of 2024, creating a foundation for the country's GDP to increase by over 7%.

To achieve the above results, especially in supplying electricity and completing the 500kV line circuit 3, the Chairman of EVN thanked the Ministry of Industry and Trade, NSMO, the State Capital Management Committee at enterprises, especially Minister Nguyen Hong Dien personally for his close direction in all aspects of work, including and first of all, the work of ensuring electricity supply as well as key investment projects.

“ It must be said that without the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade , there would be no The Minister closely monitors the 500kV line and holds meetings every two weeks, but the 500kV line is also very difficult . The project can be completed but will face many difficulties and may not achieve the progress target" - EVN Chairman affirmed and hoped that the Minister and leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to pay special attention to directing the 2 upcoming projects including the 500kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen line, the 500kV Nho Quan - Thuong Tin line and other projects that EVN is implementing. These are key projects that contribute to solving difficulties as well as ensuring electricity in the coming time.

Unforgettable memories

Sharing memories of the process, formation and development of A0 in the past and NSMO today, the Chairman of EVN said that A0 in the past and NSMO now was born in association with 500 kV projects, especially 500 kV circuit 1, which was the need to unify the power system. We had 3 regions operating separately before the 500 kV circuit 1 line, the birth of A0 served an extremely necessary and objective need at that time. From circuit 1, we have circuit 2, circuit 3, and soon there will be HVDC, which is considered to run along the length of the country.

According to Mr. Dang Hoang An, being able to participate and witness the historic moment of energizing the 500kV line 1 on May 27, 1994 was a source of pride, especially in the context of the country having just experienced a war not long ago, with a lack of conditions and resources, we completed the line in 2 years. And the technology at that time was very primitive. The SCADA system in the past had only 14 RTU devices connected nationwide; Capital used for gas station but due to embargo still have to buy to use for 500kV line.....

Nowadays, technology has developed highly, quite fully. We have 41 500 kV stations, 171 220 kV stations, nearly 900 110 kV stations operating without personnel, 100%. 82% of 220 kV stations operate without personnel .

At the time A0 was born, the power system had only 4,000 MW, the amount of electricity was approximately 14 billion kWh, but now it has increased 21 times in both capacity and output. We are currently ranked 22nd in the world, only Southeast Asia in terms of system size.

The current ratio and structure are very different from the past, there are now grid connections with foreign countries, many foreign links, many types of power plants, including PP, IPP, centrally-accounted plants belonging to state-owned enterprises. This is a huge challenge for operation, however, A0/NSMO has promoted the tradition of the past 30 years very well, and has grown with EVN and the country's electricity industry. This is something to be very proud of.

According to Mr. Dang Hoang An, the second point that he is very satisfied with is that many cadres have grown up from A0 in many different positions. It can be said that A0 is still continuing to be the cradle of training key cadres in the electricity industry . Most of them fulfill their tasks very well . This is a source of cadres with knowledge and discipline for the profession , for the electricity industry ; proving their mettle , preserving traditions and creating a brand - a brand with seriousness in discipline , qualifications and spirit , accepting challenges .

Therefore, EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An hopes that A0/NSMO engineers will continue to promote this spirit regardless of which management agency they belong to. Because wherever they are, the ultimate function remains the same - the function of regulating the system and operating the electricity market in the context of an increasingly decentralized electricity industry , with many small and scattered sources. The system is changing and we need to change to control it.

With its good tradition and achievements, the Chairman of EVN believes that NSMO will continue its glorious journey and contribute to the industry and the country.
